Your life is like a journey and the steps you take will determine the ultimate destination you will reach. It is fervently hoped that those steps you have taken during your four years at Jonathan Dayton have established a path for you which will lead you to the fulfillment of those dreams you cherish most. Keep your destination in clear focus at all times and choose each future step accordingly. If by chance you discover you are on the wrong path, remember that you are only on the initial phase of your journey and you can easily change direction. May each of you strive to reach the unreachable stars while keeping in mind that each step requires excellence in effort and achievement. With six eturning lettermen and a host of other strong sophomore and anior players returning, the team had hopes of a high finish in he Suburban Conference and a chance in the State and County ilayoffs. One may not think that a team with a 4-10-1 record ould have such outstanding players but six players made the Ul-Conference Teams, while two made All-County and All-State, hose voted to the All-State Teams were Co-Captains Alan Ipielholz and Emet Rueda. Other team players included: Seniors - Hal Wasserman, Jon Fisher, Rick Zeller, Brian Spector, Roger •rank, Ken Kaplan and Sam Wright; Juniors — Tony Francis, Paul jristow, Ron Frank, Joe Faranello, Tim McCormick, Billy Jevius, Norman Shindler, Jon McCarthy and Rick Morris; iophomores - Harry Irwin, Tom Styler, Jeff Pittinger, Steve datysak and Steve Heiter. The varsity ' s final record was 5-4, with a fifth place finish in the very competitive Suburban Conference, and a sixth place rating in Union County. The team was built around its fourteen graduating seniors, all of whom had previous varsity experience, which is a prime ingredient of a high school football team. The boys to whom I am referring are: Tom Botte, Ken Conte, Marc Hoffman, John Noce, Harold Ogden, Captain Dave Pacifico, Bill Palazzi, Joe Pepe, John Pyar, Mark Ronco, Captain Tom Russoniello, Bruno Sarracino, Gavin Widom and Jon Zurkoff. The team performed brilliantly in their five victories and even outplayed their opponent at many times in the games they lost. For example, it took a second half surge by undefeated Summit to overcome the Bulldogs ' strong bid for an upset in the fifth game of the season. Ending their season with a convincing 21-0 victory over West Orange on Thanksgiving Day, the Bulldogs can no longer be called losers. Special congratulations are appropriate for Noce, Pacifico, Pepe, Russoniello and Widom, as each was selected to a post-season all-star team. — 98 100 Another first in Dayton Athletics occurred this year as Girls ' Varsity Tennis was instituted. Thanks should go to Mr. Palmer, Eileen Bass and Margo Krasnoff for their efforts in bringing girls ' tennis to Dayton. The team was extremely successful, compiling a record of twelve wins and two losses. Throughout most of the season, they were tied with Millburn for first place, until a loss for Dayton in the final match of the year eliminated any hopes for a conference championship. The first doubles team of Randi Schnee and Margo Krasnoff went through the entire season undefeated, while Laura Hockstein compiled a record of thirteen and one, losing only her final match. The outstanding playing of Eileen Bass, Lauri Weeks, Cathy Picut, Tami Bass, Terri Bloom and Gail Bieszczak helped the team to a very successful year. With nine letter winners returning, the outlook for next year is encouraging. IRST ROW: C. Picut, T. Bloom, M. Krasnoff, T. Bass ECOND ROW: Coach E. Jasinski, R. Schnee, G ieszczak, L. Hockstein, E. It is a rare cross-country meet that has more spectators than contestants, but when your boys understand that this is part of being a cross-country runner, part of the toughness that goes into it, they will accept it as a way of life. They will take pride in the fact that, unlike other sports, they don ' t need a rally-band or spectators. The sport of cross-country has always been successful at Dayton and the 1973 season will add to this tradition. The season of 19 dual meets resulted in a record of 14 wins and 5 loses. The most satisfying wins were against Summit and Millburn. The most frustrating part of the season were the injuries to top runners Tom Lovett, Gary Weiner, and Bill Bjorstad. At the conclusion of the season, 12 athletes were awarded letters: 4 seniors and 8 underclassmen. For the first time ever in the history of sports at Dayton, a girl, Kate Spiemolz, was honored with a letter. The team was co-captained by Skip Moore and Tom Lovett. The letter winners were seniors Skip Moore, Tom Lovett, Merill Fromer, Kate Spiemolz; juniors Gary Weiner, Jeff Goldstein, Ben Geltzeiler, Tom Moore, Joe Campanelli; sophomore Bill Bjorstad; and freshmen Peter Episcopo, and Charles Kiell. 1973- DAYTON DAYTON DAYTON DAYTON DAYTON DAYTON DAYTON DAYTON DAYTON DAYTON DAYTON DAYTON DAYTON DAYTON DAYTON DAYTON DAYTON DAYTON 74 GIRLS VARSITY BASKETBALL 57 MADISON WESTFIELD UNION CO. Starting our season with last year ' s undefeated record on our shoulders was an added pressure. Our schedule of games was increased from 11 to 18 and was expanded to include some stronger opposition. We are proud of our team this year, and we have established Dayton as one of the better girls ' teams in our area. Individually, Maria Scap and Randi Schnee were the mainstays of the team in shooting and ball handling. Beth Krumholz ' s excellent playmaking will surely be missed along with Carol Bultman ' s contributions. We are looking forward to a successful season next year with returning team members Maria Johnson, Melanie Owens, Laura Hockstein, Sue Tacovsky, Randi Schnee, Kathi Grimm. It was a season which was highlighted by exciting victories and bitter defeats. The Bulldogs ended their Suburban Conference competition with an 8-6 record to gain them third place in the Conference standings. They also earned invitations to the Union County Tournament and New Jersey State Tournament action. The team was led by its eight seniors, who provided much experience and skill when on the court. These boys included co-captains Bill Palazzi and Joe Pepe, Steve Brumer, Ken Conte, Howie Drew, Jeff Grant, Rob Hydock, and Gavin Widom. Much of the bench support was provided by a promisingly young core of juniors, including John Baranek, Larry Burns, Kevin Mercer, Billy Nevius, and Mark Seymour, and sophomore Ted Johnson. Near the beginning of the season, the Bulldogs successfully defended their Holiday Tournament title with a convincing victory over a scrappy Middlesex team in the final round. Another highlight of the season came when the Bulldogs completely outplayed defending conference champion and arch rival, Summit, to a 73-59 victory, for the most satisfying win of the year. There were also many individual feats achieved by various players. Joe Pepe surpassed the 1,000 point career scoring mark to become the highest scorer in Dayton basketball history, and there also was the Millburn game, when Howie Drew sank a last second basket to pull out a victory for Dayton. The Bulldogs entered state tourney play with a 14-8 record and hope to bring a title to Jonathan Dayton. 1974 Bowling Team: FIRST ROW: Ron Frank, Bob Groder, Alan Lipton, Dave Shulman, Lee Zeoli. The team finished at 22-14 (63.3%), good enough for a third place spot in the Conference. The two most memorable matches of the year were a hard fought 2-1 win over first place Summit early in the season, and a powerful 3-0 blitz of second place Verona. During the year, the team swept 3-0 five times, while only being shut out 0-3 twice. The outstanding bowler of the year was Glen Halbsgut. He held high average at 172 for 36 games, high series at 628 and high game 226. Lee Zeoli also deserves mention for posting eight games over the magic 200 mark. 1973-74 Indoor Track Team: Left to Right ROW I: B. Gambee, J. Ragucci, B. Van Buskirk, J. Rice, J. Noce, B. Heide, L. The 1974 Indoor Track season proved to be a most successful one. The team had three duel meets, winning all of them by beating Pingry, Johnson Regional, and Governor Livingston. It also entered two State Development meets, where a great deal of experience was gained. The team took 7th place in the County meet, where the shot put team of Bruce Heide, John Noce, Marc Cooper and Bruno Saraccino took 2nd place, and the hurdle relay team earned 4th place. In the state relays the mile relay team took 4th place at the State Group meet. At this same meet, Tim McCormick got into the semi-finals of the 60 yard dash; Tom Lovett won Ins heat of the mile; and Bruce Heide took 1st place in the shot put, becoming the State Group III Shot Put Champion. The coaches were very pleased with the fine turnout of underclassmen. Of the 65 boys and girls out for the team, only 3 are seniors, which makes the future very promising. Letter Winners were: 1. The season started at the Hillside Invitational Tournament where Dayton ' s 101 lb. matman. Bill Francis, took third place honors. Seven matches into the year there were 3 wrestlers still undefeated: Bill Francis (101), Bruce Hofman (108), and Co-captain Tony Francis (115). But the injury plague struck hard and often. Bruce Hofmann (7-1), Co-captains, Tony Francis (6-2-1) and Mitch Kotler (4-6) and heavy weight, Glen Arnold (1-0) all were lost to the team early in the season. This year ' s matmen entered the District XIV Wrestling Tournament with a young squad and came out with two medal ists. Second-seeded Bill Francis (13-3) was upset in the semi-final round and placed fourth. A pleasant surprise came when senior, Joel Goldberg, (1-3) beat the third and fourth seed and lost in a close match to the District Champion for the third place finish in the 148 lb. weight class. The hopes are high for a successful season next year with nine varsity men returning. 113 1974 VARSITY AND JUNIOR VARSITY BASEBALL SCHEDULE April 5 Hillside 1 1 April 6 Brearley Reg.
