As you have learned, real success demands more from an individual than most people are willing to offer — not more than they are capable of offering. Real success means achieving a degree of excellence in whatever you do. To achieve this most satisfying kind of suc- cess demands the strength of character that is essen- tial to strenuous effort. It requires the stretching of your capabilities and all of you can stretch them way beyond the limits you think you have. I hope that your high school education has con- tributed in some small way to your achieving the degree of excellence that you may be seeking. For your future tasks, I am confident you are ready. My best wishes go with you. Robert L. LaVanture Principal BOARD OF EDUCATION Standing L. to R. ' Mr. Little, Dr. Jones, Dr. Hagedorn, Dr. Josephson. Seated L. to R.: Mr. Conlin, Mr. Dios, Mr. Ward, Mrs. Waldt. Missing: Mr. Cullen. To each member of the class of 1970 — As you move toward adulthood and the assump- tion of the responsibilities which developing maturity entails, you will, increasingly, look backward to your experiences in high school as well as forward to your hopes and plans for your future. As you do, we hope that you will find, as so many of your predecessors have found, that you have been well prepared for the problems which you will face as you pursue the sometimes lonely journey. We wish for you the happiness which goes with accomplishment, the pleasure which accompanies suc- cess, and the satisfaction which rewards the person who builds something which is of value to his fellow-men. That is when we have come to know That winter is a long time Yellow brittle and snapped tightly against the sleep of cold We can touch silver of a kind, But only during the sadness of autumn nights the infinite sighing of summer water and the hesitant passions of new spring. There is one long time of sleep when silvered beauty ceases to possess us the time when we exist, wide-eyed, with our thoughts plucked out of us and discarded like so many unmemorable postcards. A long time, it is and the division we have come to define as infinitely small and sagacious forms itself between an autmn night one day And a winter blue sky the next. silver and stain, silver and yellow brittle. American Field Service Dayton ' s AFS student, Sandy Dijkstra of the Netherlands. Letter from Sandy Dijkstra: Smiling faces in a new classroom, seeing people at another basketball game that we won, eating at Stanley ' s, musical rehearsals, and cafeteria food ... all those are memories I will treasure. But the many friends I have made will be my fondest memory. I have one paragraph to thank you for all this and obviously, that won ' t be nearly enough. Not even a whole yearbook would be sufficient. So what is left but . . . THANK YOU. Sandy and her American sister Kathy speak to other AFS students. 115 Varsity Club Row One: A. Ramos, B. ZabelskL Row Two: H. Levine, S. Getchlik, A. Starr, E. Although the record is not impressive, the Bulldogs provided stiff opposition for all the teams which they faced. Led by seniors Bill Keller, Bob Vaughan, Dave Epstein, Bill Benkus, Garry Fox, Bob Sasse, Woody Younge, Charlie Foster, Al Ramos, and Pete Meierdierck, the Bulldogs had a solid squad of upperclassmen which gave 100 per cent. The highlights of the season came when Dayton tied an undefeated Ridge team, and beat Kenilworth. Against the Brearley Bears, the Bulldogs showed a strong ground game led by Joe Rapuano and passing game led by quarterback Bob Janukowicz. Although nine players are departing, Dayton has a strong corp for next year. Players such as Bob Janukowicz, Joe Rapuano, Art Weisbrot, Gary Grant, Carmen Bove, Danny Silverman, Pete Demner, Scott Prussing, Mitch Wolff, Jay Silverman, John Hagemeyer, Ed Graessle, and Dennis Marino will give Springfield a strong team.
