WE ARE UNITED BY LANGUAGE AUGUST CAPRIO, D.C. Years ago the need for understanding other languages was not great. One person ' s sphere of life was very limited, whereas the outside world was a spacious undefined extension of a dream. As men of all tongues draw closer together personal spheres expand and exotic dreams become realities. Had man made no attempt to communicate with people of different nations, the great countries of this world would be lagging, isolated tribes. Fortunately the interest in progress and peace has motivated man to learn from and contribute to his neighbors of foreign birth. Jonathan Dayton, seeking to fulfill its role in furthering these goals, has made available the study of four foreign languages — German, French, Spanish, and Latin. Experience in conver- sation, an investigation of significant literature of the lan- guages, and historical and cultural information are offered. Conscientious students find the courses of our language de- partment, coordinated by August Caprio, both lucrative and en- joyable. I saw you close that window! Je vais, tu vas, il vas . . . AND ENRICHED BY THE ARTS If the purpose of education were to prepare students academ- ically only there would be no need for a Fine Arts Department. Our student body would be merely book-toters ; senior plays would be unheard of. Jonathan Dayton is concerned about this aspect, as evidenced by our admirable music, art, and drama department. Mr. Blecker, our instrumental music teacher, is doing a highly commendable job with the marching and concert bands. Stu- dents can receive both elementary and advanced instruction on many instruments. Mr. Edgerton, our new vocal music teacher, has been doing an equally fine job in developing and coordinating musical skills. Artistically inclined students turn to our Art Department, head- ed by Mr. Brodman. They receive instruction in basic funda- mentals and can experiment creatively in art classes and Art Workshop. The Dramatics Department under Mr. Trinity helps students develop effective speaking and dramatic skills. Speech and Drama courses prove beneficial and enjoyable. EDWARD BROWN, D.C. ART D.
