ENGLISH OPENS THE DOOR JOHN HOGLAND, D.C. The art of communication makes possible a relationship among the ideas, goals and accomplishments of all people throughout the world. Smoke signals didn ' t suffice, and picture forms are easily misconstrued, but words have sur- vived. Since communication is such a vital part of existence, the art of speaking and writing and understanding is a precise one. A greater effort must be made to express and comprehend valuable ideas in order that a more substantial num- ber of people can derive both benefits and pleasure from the words of others. Such is the purpose of the English Department at Jonathan Dayton. A pleas- ant and inspiring variety of literature is presented including at least four of Shakespeare ' s best loved plays. We learn to appreciate the creative genius of men from Hawthorne to Frost, Chaucer to Dylan Thomas. Most important we realize that English and the masterpieces of literature created in it and preserved by it are as alive today as the day they were written. STANDING: W. Garwacki, A. Kropinicki, C. THE REALMS OF MATH AND • e £i SEATED: W. Lopardo, M. Kleissler, T. Doherty, S. Bialecki. STANDING: J. Palfi, T. Baker, W. Jones, L. Piccollo. MISSING: D. Wayne. JOSEPH SOTT, D.C. An understanding of mathematics is a vital as well as fascinating requirement in today ' s world. The days when a farmer ' s son could get along with knowing only enough math to be able to count the chicken ' s eggs are gone forever. Fortunately Jonathan Dayton has a very competent faculty in this field, which is one of rapidly increasing significance. General and Business Math, as well as Al- gebra, Geometry, and Trigonometry are offered. In or- der to satiate the appetites of curious seniors, and fur- ther those of particularly eager ones, a Math Analysis course is made available. Our expanding math program, including the introduc- tion of the School Mathematics Study Group technique indicates the essentiality of modern math. Two plus two will always equal four, but this alone will not laiinrh a rnrkot ' Any suggestions on how to do this one?
