The Living, Perpetual Duty Without knowledge man is no more capable than a baby. His life is brief and meaningless. The greatness of the world was not achieved by inane ius Caesar a gift of the stars. The radiance of man ' s knowledge illuminates the dark places of the earth and the mind. (Ours is that illuminated earth and awakening mind.) Knowledge is personal, but binds masses together. In darkness we are separate, vidual capabilities and the folly of intellectual chauvinism. As one candle is used to light another, so man ' s knowledge is diffused through communication. Its light grows brighter as each recognizes the need for it, since ignorance is not apparent until exposed to the light of musty remnant of a gray philosopher ' s musings. It is the living, perpetual duty of every human being who has opened his eyes to the light. of Every Human Being . LaVANTURE ANNE ROMANO BOARD OF EDUCATION WORK HARD FOR OUR BENEFIT — I- DR. WARREN M. DAVIS DR. RANDOLPH T. JACOBSEN The organization and co-ordination of the diversified elements of our school into an efficient unified body is the responsibility of the administration. Dr. Warren M. Davis, as Superintendent of Schools, is concerned with the admin- istrative matters of all three Regional Schools. Dr. Randolf T. Jacobsen and Mr. Lewis Fredericks serve as his assistants. The efforts of these men and of those who serve on the Board of Education are directed toward enriching and improving our education system. Deciding school policy, choosing courses and teaching methods which will best enable each student to meet the challenges of the future, determining rules for the best interests of the student body and enforcing them are the respon- sibilities vested in the administration. Mr. Robert F. LaVanture, Principal, and Miss Anne Romano, Assistant Principal, are directly accountable for the run- ning of Dayton. A good administration such as ours increases the prestige and renown of our school with colleges and other schools, and for this we owe them a great deal of thanks. ' LEWIS FREDERICKS J. Mason, A. Blanda, R. Cannon, M. Rice. WE RECEIVE SPECIAL CARE Reading skills and a healthy scholastic environment must be developed in or- der to provide a good foundation for learning. Students who require assistance in this area turn to the Special Services Department. This department provides invaluable aid in encouraging and cultivating the desire and aptitude essential to the learning process. An important part of this program is remedial reading instruction and courses in advanced reading. This skill is an essential one because without a well de- veloped command of words, all other fields are hindered. Thus our Special Serv- ices Department devotes a great part of their program to raising both the standards of, and the interest in reading. Adjustment, both scholastically and socially is mandatory for a successful high school career. Among their services, our competent Special Service Staff pro- vides a doctor, nurse, dentist and psychologist, working together to prepare all students equally for their present and future experiences. 1RRL °RETR J. Crawford, C. Singer. STANDING: M. Lefever, M. Giannone, T. Gam- bino. It has been said, It takes nearly as much ability to know how to profit by good advice as to know how to act for one ' s self. The Guidance Office functions on the assumption that we, the student body, have that ability. They follow the student and his progress from the time he is finishing grammar school through his first year of col- lege. Each year his courses must be selected according to his ability, his goals, and his past performance. He is advised through personal interviews about his future career and then is shown how to achieve this through college, trade school, business or the Armed Forces. When problems arise concerning personality conflicts, an unusual difficulty with courses, or a necessary change of schedule, it is to the Guidance Office that the students turn. During the students ' senior year the department is kept busy determining class rank, admin- istering and recording College Boards and Achievement Tests, send- ing transcripts and applications, and receiving acceptances and relat- ed correspondences. CHARLOTTE SINGER DIRECTOR OF GUIDANCE Such impor- tant deci- sions! 1 ENGLISH OPENS THE DOOR JOHN HOGLAND, D.C. The art of communication makes possible a relationship among the ideas, goals and accomplishments of all people throughout the world. Smoke signals didn ' t suffice, and picture forms are easily misconstrued, but words have sur- vived. Since communication is such a vital part of existence, the art of speaking and writing and understanding is a precise one. A greater effort must be made to express and comprehend valuable ideas in order that a more substantial num- ber of people can derive both benefits and pleasure from the words of others. Such is the purpose of the English Department at Jonathan Dayton. A pleas- ant and inspiring variety of literature is presented including at least four of Shakespeare ' s best loved plays. We learn to appreciate the creative genius of men from Hawthorne to Frost, Chaucer to Dylan Thomas. Most important we realize that English and the masterpieces of literature created in it and preserved by it are as alive today as the day they were written. STANDING: W. Garwacki, A. Kropinicki, C. Doherty, S. Bialecki. STANDING: J. Palfi, T. Baker, W. Jones, L. Piccollo. MISSING: D. Wayne. JOSEPH SOTT, D.C. An understanding of mathematics is a vital as well as fascinating requirement in today ' s world. The days when a farmer ' s son could get along with knowing only enough math to be able to count the chicken ' s eggs are gone forever. Fortunately Jonathan Dayton has a very competent faculty in this field, which is one of rapidly increasing significance. General and Business Math, as well as Al- gebra, Geometry, and Trigonometry are offered. In or- der to satiate the appetites of curious seniors, and fur- ther those of particularly eager ones, a Math Analysis course is made available. Our expanding math program, including the introduc- tion of the School Mathematics Study Group technique indicates the essentiality of modern math. Two plus two will always equal four, but this alone will not laiinrh a rnrkot ' Any suggestions on how to do this one? SCIENCE BROADEN FOR US ' Keep your eyes on that finger! Science is as small as an atom and as large as the uni- verse. It is as close as the air we breathe and as far as the most distant star. An investigation of science is a probe of life, and it supplies an opportunity for greater understand- ing of its facets. Only through experimentation and a study of the records of established findings can we derive the benefit of scien- tific knowledge. At Jonathan Dayton, standard, as well as advanced, courses in the fields of Biology, Chemistry and Physics are offered. Geared to prepare the interested stu- dent, these courses stress individual attempts and research experimentation and individual projects. They provide the basis for proving and understanding fundamental scientific theories and facts, and the incentive for further study. Tomorrow ' s scientific advancements, which will very likely determine our future existence, are to originate in the minds of today ' s students. Not each of us is capable of being an Einstein, but we can learn from his accomplish- ments and his diligence. . rv yrri —mm WALTER HOHN, D.C. R. Scott, M. Parrish, W. Hohn, M. Morgan, C. Sinko. History is not just a series of dates, it is a record of people living, experiment- ing, and learning to profit from the experience they gain in order to construct a better world for themselves. The explanation and understanding of these people and their contributions is the main concern of the Social Studies Depart- ment. Through such courses as Modern European History, History of the Far East, Development of Western Thought, Economics, United States History, Psy- chology, and Sociology we are able to learn of the history and culture of the world ' s diverse peoples, whose ideas and actions greatly influence ours. If we are able to say, I know the past, then we may rightly say, I know some- thing of the future, for a knowledge of the past prepares one to profit from man ' s past errors and to derive experience from his folly. Learning to understand and interpret man ' s actions in the past and in modern times presents the main challenge to the student. Fulfilling these demands, he is more competent and better prepared to live a fuller, more beneficial life. TO THE PAST AND FUTURE History isn ' t really so bad! ' I like my classes informal! ' A little supervision never does any harm. ' Testing, one, two, three! ' 15 WE ARE UNITED BY LANGUAGE AUGUST CAPRIO, D.C. Years ago the need for understanding other languages was not great. One person ' s sphere of life was very limited, whereas the outside world was a spacious undefined extension of a dream. As men of all tongues draw closer together personal spheres expand and exotic dreams become realities. Had man made no attempt to communicate with people of different nations, the great countries of this world would be lagging, isolated tribes. Fortunately the interest in progress and peace has motivated man to learn from and contribute to his neighbors of foreign birth. Jonathan Dayton, seeking to fulfill its role in furthering these goals, has made available the study of four foreign languages — German, French, Spanish, and Latin. Experience in conver- sation, an investigation of significant literature of the lan- guages, and historical and cultural information are offered. Conscientious students find the courses of our language de- partment, coordinated by August Caprio, both lucrative and en- joyable. I saw you close that window! Je vais, tu vas, il vas . . . AND ENRICHED BY THE ARTS If the purpose of education were to prepare students academ- ically only there would be no need for a Fine Arts Department. Our student body would be merely book-toters ; senior plays would be unheard of. Jonathan Dayton is concerned about this aspect, as evidenced by our admirable music, art, and drama department. Mr. Blecker, our instrumental music teacher, is doing a highly commendable job with the marching and concert bands. Stu- dents can receive both elementary and advanced instruction on many instruments. Mr. Edgerton, our new vocal music teacher, has been doing an equally fine job in developing and coordinating musical skills. Artistically inclined students turn to our Art Department, head- ed by Mr. Brodman. They receive instruction in basic funda- mentals and can experiment creatively in art classes and Art Workshop. The Dramatics Department under Mr. Trinity helps students develop effective speaking and dramatic skills. Speech and Drama courses prove beneficial and enjoyable. EDWARD BROWN, D.C. ART D. Our business depart- ment provides practice on office machinery. In addition it operates a Distributive Education pro- gram in which students attend school in the morning, receiving on the spot training in in- dustry in the afternoon. Teaching the skills of successful homemaking is the concern of the Home Economics Department. Girls learn to prepare food, tailor clothes, and or- ganize an efficient home. All students have the opportunity to be prepared for future occupations upon graduation. MARY ANN ULBRICH, D.C. ELEANOR MURPHY, D.C. Not the whole box! ' ' Who said that? The Agriculture program at Dayton is unique in that it is the only one of its kind in Union, Essex and Morris counties. Ag prepares a student for continued study in college or for enter- ing fields of Agricultural endeavor immediately upon gradua- tion from high school. The students not only learn the scien- tific aspects of agriculture but also various farm procedures and the essentials of successful farm management. A basic knowledge of the arts of working with wood and metal is taught at Dayton, and in addition, mechanical drawing, graph- ic arts, and printing. The skills learned in Industrial Arts can be used not only on the job but also practically in the home. A. LaSota, Ag. STANLEY GROSSMAN, D.C. P. Danilo, Ag. 19 OUR PHYSICAL WELFARE JOHN BROWN, D.C. To become a thoroughly good person it is necessary to keep a sound mind in a sound body. The job of keeping us physically fit is that of the Physical Education Department. Daily exercise in various forms promote physical fitness and teach basic sportsmanlike attitudes and techniques. The boys participate in gymnastics, speedball, the obstacle course, and many other activities in their respective seasons. The girls enjoy field hock- ey, soccer, basketball, archery, and many others. Regional is fortunate to have such a comprehensive and effec- tive health program. When a student graduates, he has com- pleted a study of four important phases of health education: Human Anatomy, First Aid and Safety, Driver Education, and Social Problems. Health is necessary to all the duties, as well as pleasures of life. Traffic clears when this car appears. 20 Girls ' gym teacher? ' IS OF MAJOR CONCERN BARBARA DIMMERS, LIBRARIAN PHYLIS JARMAN, HEALTH COUNSELOR CAFETERIA STAFF CUSTODIAL STAFF Often the work of special staffs goes unnoticed. Who selects and processes the most useful books? Who plans and prepares our meals, is ready to assist us in case of illness, and keeps our school safe and sanitary? Our school librarian, Miss Dimmers, is ready to assist us in obtaining help con- cerning reference; she and the library staff are also responsible for the many enjoyable and enriching books at our disposal. Miss Maitland and her staff take particular interest in the preparation of nourishing food for us and a gen- erally pleasant atmosphere. Our friendly custodians are the ones who make sure the school is always kept in the best condition. Extremely important on our list of those very necessary people is our school nurse Mrs. Jarman, appointed this year. It is to her that we come with our aches and pains and sprains. Without the services these people perform the process of learning would be greatly hampered. MARGARET MAITLAND CAFETERIA DIRECTOR SENIORS ROBERT E. RIES PRESIDENT Springfield RICHARD E. The Student Council is the representative of the student to the faculty and the administration of the school. It provides a chance for the student body to influence the practical running of the school. Through the combined effort of the youth and experienced educators a workable plan is derived. An important aspect of the Council ' s program includes the supplementation of academic and social phases of school life with extracurricular activities. It holds an annual Student Council Dance in the fall, a hootenanny, and sells school blazers and jackets bearing the school crest. Some of the new ideas initiated this year in- clude a mock presidential election, the sponsoring of a literary contest within the schools, and an educational program of speakers from various United Na- tions Embassies. The money raised is used toward scholarships which are awarded to deserving seniors. The senior and junior classes elect five members each and the sophomore and freshman classes elect three members each. By giving responsibility to the stu- dent, the Council helps to build better citizens. ROW 1: L. Hodapp, E. Kreuger, M. Kay, T. Kalen, P. Adickman, C. Alfieri ROW 2: P. Bultman. A. Fisher, S. Perker. They opened the sea- son shutting out last season ' s Union County Champs, Jefferson, 1-0. They went on to down our sister school, A. L. Johnson, and tie Scotch Plains and Edison Tech. The team work of the 4M boys: Max, Muller, MacMillan, and Mayer, as well as the excellent playing of Fred Reu, Mike Heinke, Val Spina, Stu Falkin, and Keith Neigel, our goalie, helped in giving the team an undefeated record going into the eleventh game. Regional tasted its first defeats when it lost to Westfield and Cran- ford. Despite a record of 5-3-7 the team only placed fourth in the Watchung Conference, but took sec- ond place in Union County. FOOTBALL Sparked by the excellent work of All-County and All-State Guard, Alan Greenie Greenberg; All- County and All-State Tackle, Dan Etzold; and All-County Back, Carl Yaras, Springfield ended the season better than last year, compiling a 6- 2-1 record. The fine running of Yaras, the coun- ty ' s top scorer, not only accounted for many of Regional ' s 203 points, but established a new school record of 120 points, last set in 1948. Other outstanding players included versatile Tom Tonkin, counted on to do a good job in any line position; Mike Adickman and Frank Haydu, two fine runners; Bob Ries, our quarter- back; and a junior, Dan Ginter, who ran for a 96 yard touchdown in the Roselle game. The season started off very well with the Bulldogs beating both of our sister schools G.L.R.H.S. and A.LJ.R.H.S. and shutting out Hillside 37-0. We lost to the powerful Scotch Plains team and were just edged out by Westfield. The annual Thanksgiving football game, played under less than favorable weath- er conditions, proved to be one of the dis- appointments of the season with Rahway tying Regional 6-6. Jeff Karlin, who took second place in the district championships, ended the season with an outstanding 11-0-1 record. He also has the dis tinction of being one of the only wrestlers to have a 31-1-3 record for three years of varsity wrestling, a record of which few can boast. Mark Muller ' s fine form helped him in getting a 7-4-1 record. Rich Basta (8-4-0) proved valuable to the squad as well as Mike Geoghegen, another fine wrestler. With only five returning senior lettermen and one junior, the coach must rely on inexperienced men to fill the va- cancies. The team can boast of several individual stars. Pete Constancia is likely to break the half mile record, and Dave Macmillan, the mile. Two men who lettered as freshmen, Dan Ginter and Mike Tabakin, run the 100 and 220 yard dashes as well as the 440 yard dash respectively. Both will be counted upon to substantiate their fine past records. Mike Adickman aims to break the shot put and discus records set last year. The girls in Regional interested in participating in athletic activities are afforded many varied oppor- tunities by the G.A.A. Each season has its sports. In the fall, field hock- ey, soccer, and rec games are offered. Early winter sports include bowling and volleyball, while later in the winter basketball is offered. The spring brings with it the start of archery, golf, and softball. The program tries to instill and de- velop the qualities of leadership, sportsmanship, and an interest in school spirit and sports in the girls at Regional. State and school awards are given to all those girls who have fulfilled the specified requirements. For those interested, county and state playdays and special tournaments are held at various times throughout the year. The Leader ' s Club is the governing body of the G.A.A. Leadership, scholarship, sportsmanship and interest in the program form the basis for se- lecting the club ' s members. The club ' s duties in- clude managing and officiating the sports and all other jobs which are necessary for the smooth running of the program. 170 T Which way to the locker room? tv  Only their mother knows for sure. ■I mm i I jM mm wmwm Dayton faculty versus Harlem Diplomats.
