For Reference Not to be taken from this Horary L - i IE e 4 W t REGIONALOGUE 1961 Jonathan Dayton Regional High School Springfield, New Jersey INTRODUCTION As the school year draws to its close, it is with mixed feelings that we reflect on its events. There has been much to remember here at Jonathan Dayton; much that we will carry with us for the rest of our lives. For the past four years this school has been the central force controlling our whole environment. Now, as graduation approaches, new vistas stretch ahead: more schooling for many, service in the armed forces, careers, and marriage. There will be obstacles ahead greater than any ever encountered within the protecting walls of high school. In meeting all our future triumphs and downfalls, however, we will have to our advantage the knowledge that standing behind us are four years of guided growth; four years of excellent preparation for whatever our futures encompass. uidKAKY SfKINGRELD, N. J, N M E M O R A M Dedicated, skillful, energetic, aimiable . . . Mr. Suchena was a demanding yet understanding leader, a pioneer in the field of physical education, and a true sports- man. In a decade here at Regional his ultimate goal was to develop students of sound spirit, mind, and body: qualities that he himself possessed. All who knew him will certainly miss the radiance that emanated from him. D E D I C A T O N In Dedication to Mr. Herbert H. Palmer: FOR YOUR PATIENCE, FOR YOUR SENSE OF HUMOR, FOR YOUR LOYALTY AND SCHOOL SPIRIT, FOR YOUR UNDERSTANDING AND SPIRIT OF GOOD WILL, AND, FOR YOUR WILLINGNESS TO HELP ANY STUDENT AT ANY TIME, We, the Class of 1961, do respectfully dedicate to a former Regionalite our yearbook, the ' 61 Regionalogue. _ rdmini$tva tlon an acu To the Class of 1961: As you leave Regional and prepare to go your separate ways, I hope you have gained many things that wi benefit you the rest of your life. Never stop learning. It is the key to your future happiness and success. May I wish you good luck and Godspeed in your future plans. Sincerely, Dr. Randolf T. Jacobsen yvf y t Principal Cc o A U - Superintendent Dr. Warren M. Davis Superintendent of Schools • As you leave your high school days behind you and assume your rightful place in the world of young adults, you meet the greatest challenges ever to face any generation of Americans. The problems of the sixties will try the mettle of every person in our land, but the heaviest burden of responsibility will be borne by the educated. We are well into an era of phenomenal change which has come about largely through the influence of mass learning. The jungle has given way to the university. To meet the challenges of the sixties, we in our nation must learn and never cease to learn. As the class of 1961, graduating from a fine high school in an economically and culturally favored area, you have every opportunity to write your name in history at least as large as did that illustrious pioneer for whom your school was named. It is your future, but it is also the world ' s future. May God be with you as you fashion it. The team piled up a 6-3 record against some of the top teams in the state. For the first time in the history of Regional, both Somerville and Rahway were beaten in the same season. This year ' s team was led by quarterback Tom Marino and halfback Herb Etzold. Two other senior backs, Phil Ritters- bacher and Carl Kirchberger, supplied a lot of needed power. The line was sparked by Fred Unglaub, John Buckley, Bill Goeghegan, Rick Venice, Art Gerber, Marty Sica, and John Lies, all of them doing a wonderful job. The Thanksgiving game provided the biggest thrill of the season, with Marino connecting with Herb Etzold in the End Zone for the only score of the game. Where to, Coach? First row J. Buckley, F. The season started off with a heartbreaking loss to top ranked Hillside by 4 points. After this, the team gradually slid downhill until the end of the season when they became more unified and proved a real threat to several top teams. Scoring honors for this year go to Stu Chesler and Dave Lord with junior Marty Sica controlling the back- boards. John Lies, Tom Marino, Jackie Apgar, and Herb Etzold handled the backcourt chores with John Lies leading the scoring among them. With the return of Sica and Apgar and several others who saw varsity action this year, next season ' s outlook appears very promising. I can touch the rim! BASKETBALL First row: R. Sosidka, S. The performances were at 8:00 P.M., and were given at Governor Livingston on March 3, and at Jonathan Dayton on March 4. Mr. Joseph Trinity and Mr. Edward Brown directed the acting, singing, and dancing, with the assistance of student directors Pam Francis and Bill Wood. The scene of the musical was the inn of the Red Mill in Katwyk-Ann-Zee, Holland, during the year 1900. The props were picturesque, the costumes lavish. The show was a joint production of Governor Living- ston and Jonathan Dayton Regional High Schools. The cast for The Red Mill ' was as follows: Bob Seltzer, Don MacNair, Mark Biddelman, Ted Davis, Bill Wood, Steve Ryder, Larry Simon, Ken Wilson, Larry Lichter, Dave Lord, Valerie Crocco, Elise Lindauer, Cindy Brandle, Sharon Sampler, Elissa Sisia, Ginny Stewart, Gloria Rouse, Donna Kristiansen, Eileen Wagner, and Barbara Baldwin. Arleen Straver, Barbara Starr, Judy Allen, and Tracy Bachrach were the lovely dancers, and there was a 46-member chorus. The singing was accompanied by a 12-member orchestra. Both performances were well-received by the audiences, and The Red Mill remains a never-to-be forgotten event for all those who either engaged in its production or viewed the final results.
