The opening of JonaThan DayTon Regional High School in I937 marked a milesTone in The hisTory of public educaTion in New Jersey. For This was The TirsT regional high school disTricT To be esTablished in The sTaTe. Before ThaT Time, The Towns of Berkeley l-leighTs, Clark, Garwood, KenilworTh, MounTainside, and Springfield had senT Their high school sTudenTs To oTher communiTies. However, when The receiving schools became overcrowded, The STaTe Board OT Ed- ucaTion recommended +ha+ The six Towns uniTe To Torm a single high school. ConsTrucTion of The school was begun in January, I936, as soon as a combined Board oi EducaTion had been Tormed. Since The TirsT year oT operaTion, Regionals growTh has been conTinuous-gradual aT TirsT, buT exTremely rapid in recenT years. The combined populaTion of The Regional communiTies has grown from l5,000 To nearly 45,000 and The schools enrollmenT has in- creased Trom an original 817 To approximaTely I 600 This year. FLO ui I SCALE T - 9 nc- J a: 1. Q An expansion program was begun in l95I, and in l953 TwenTy-Three classrooms and a new gymnasium were added To The original Springfield building. This addiTion nearly doubled The school's TaciIiTies. And in SepTember. I956, a 37-classroom building in Clark will be ready Tor sTudenTs from Clark and Garwood. AnTicipaTing ThaT enrollmenT will conTinue To rise sharply, The Board of EducaTion has purchased prop- erTy in Berkeley HeighTs and expecTs Thar a new school will be builT There in a few years.
