The reign of the little red schoolhouse is fading. Just as the switchboard and telephone have replaced the old school bell, a huge sguare edifice replaces the little red school house. Take a good look at our surroundings — they ' re going to change — the old gives way to the new. Loyalty holds us to the familiar but we are lucky to keep the familiar and enlarge and enhance it. Regional ' s U-Shape becomes a square. Our environment grows — carpenters, plumbers, painters, architects, bricklayers, and electricians are added to our im- mediate surroundings. Regional takes on a cosmopolitan air — watch us grow and progress. We start the day in a modern way. Morning traffic jam at R.H.S. ' IN? (Teen-Inn) - An apple fob uau . To Mr. De Rosa— For his infinite patience. For depth of understanding, His discerning ability as a teacher and advisor, For innumerable hours devoted to our activities, For his willingness to lend a hand when the going is rough, For his congeniality, sincerity and friendliness to all, We gratefully dedicate this, our 1952 Regionalogue, to Louis De Rosa. Arriving with the dawn. A little strategy. 10 V 4fek LOUIS DE ROSA English, U. S. History Hall Patrol Advisor Senior Class Advisor Ass ' t. Football Coach Basketball Coach A.B., Muhlenburg College 11 WARREN W. HALSEY Wilt PRINCIPAL In the Regional District the effect of the rise in the national birth rate together with the influx of people into new housing developments has placed a severe strain on the present school facilities. It is estimated that the Regional High School enrollment will continue to rise until it will be more than double the present en- rollment in 1963. As seniors you were well aware of the crowded conditions in the high school. You are to be congratulated for the support you gave in urging your parents, relatives and neigh- bors to approve the bond issue for an addition. While you will not have the opportunity of attending the en- larged high school, you will always have the satisfaction of knowing that you helped to make it possible for future Regionalites to have adeguate school facilities. Many thanks and good wishes to all of you. OFFICE STIFF CAMILLE LADNER MARION SCHROPPE EILEEN WOJTOWICZ 12 BOARD OF EDUCATION Front row: W. W. Halsey. Mrs. H. Smith. J. Bertolamy, R. Southgate. W. It is the aim of this paper to publish not only that which comes under the heading of news, but also to act as a sounding board for student opinion through its editorials and columns, and to assist all student organizations with the power of publicity on hand. This is easy to see since the editors often change their minds without informing the typists. When this happens moans and groans can be heard coming from Room 207 and Mrs. Montgomery is right on hand with the Bicarbs for the ailing typists. This paints a pretty black picture but all ' s well that ends well it is said, so we hope you enjoy our 1952 Yearbook. We worked hard but willingly on it so that in some way on someday you might relive those wonderful four years at Regional. Solving yearbook headaches. V o +%— Watch the birdie. HONOR SOCIETY The little red schoolhouse springs to life again in the image of Kettle Hollow, Tennessee, a small rural school sponsored by Regional through the Honor So- ciety, whose members brighten this sponsorship with a friendly gesture of sending Christmas gifts to its pupils, too. To add an academic touch to its agenda, the society presents awards to the graduating seniors who rate highest in the field of mathematics, social studies, English, languages, and science. FORUM CLUB Much fame has been brought to Regional through the forum club. John Borter, President of the Union County Student Forum did an outstanding job in establishing many new ideals in t his organization. Regional is honored in having Emily Buckley as treasurer of N. J. I. R. F., an active and well-organized group. Daryl Mjaslow, in addition to belonging to other forum groups, participated in Junior Town Meeting. Subjects for panels discussion vary from The ideal Boy and Girl to Is Our Foreign Policy Leading Us Into War? The major acti- vities of the Forum Club include active parti- cipation in the N. J. I. R. F., the Union County Student Forum, Junior Town Meeting, and Regional ' s newly established Forensic League Program.  - . Questions? (John Borter presides at Union County Forum) J disagree. STAGE CREW Responsibilities galore rest on the weary, but ever capable shoulders of our stage crew. Without them, our Commencement, P.T.A. meetings, concerts, and weekly assemblies just wouldn ' t be. Spotlights, footlights, microphones and cur- tains make up their hectic life. They attend rehearsals of our variety shows and find fur- niture, props, and all settings which go to make up an interesting stage. All backstage activities, including the pro- visions for our many guests, rest in their hands, and let ' s not forget that they give up their afternoons and evenings whenever the occa- sion demands. HALL PATROL Guardians of the halls-our hall patrol con- trols the traffic where jams usually occur. Lunch time supervision of students is one of their headaches. With a very crowded popu- lation at Regional this year, their problems have increased and will grow even greater as our little red school-house expands. ■•■ m m The men who man the cameras. ■ Hl 4« - ' v. STUDENT COUNCIL Our student governing body- is an active group interested in helping to solve student and school-life problems. As a mem- ber of Union County Student Council Conference, our organi- zation works with other groups to discuss better relationships between student and teacher. Drives for worthy causes are conducted by the council (they piled up a bit there in the fall, didn ' t they?) and sponsoring sguare-dances are some of the council ' s many good deeds. FUTURE FARMGRSof AMERICA The F. F. A. is the national organization of, by, and for boys studying vocational argriculture in high school. The Pioneer Chapter at Regional is devoted to good citizenship, good farming, good scholastics, and philanthropic work. The boys compete with other F. F. A. boys throughout the state in all types of contests. Many a Regional Pioneer has Walked off with state honors. The sincerity of the F. F. A. youth is effectively expressed by their motto; Learning to do — Doing to Learn — Earning to Live — Living to serve. 29 First row: Mr. J. Cummings (Assistant Advisor), A. Steimle, T. Nolan. M. Good enthusiastic workers helped to make class dances successful. A high scholastic level has been attained by many juniors as many classmates have made the national honor society. The sports field is crowded with outstanding juniors, some of whom have played varsity for two or three years. Our prom was a special highlight on the social calendar. We might be small but we ' re mighty. Our football team was one of the best ever; our dance was one of this year ' s highlights; our artists won a good propor- tion of the prizes in the Hallowe ' en window-painting contest. We expect to shine in many more activities in our next three years at Regional. Catch tte u FOOTBALL Starting his second year at Regional High, Coach John Brown built up the 1951 sguad from mostly second stringers and inexper- ienced players. The green team came through with an upset in the first game, beating Hillside 21-13; the other impressive win was the 14-0 win over Roselle which, at the time, was un- defeated. The record of four wins and four losses did not show what the team could really do. They started out strong by winning four out of the first five but, with the injuries hamp- ering the team, lost the last three. The team, being light, especially the line, had to rely on speed and passing to pull them through. Hav- ing no standouts, the team could not be built around one or two star players, and thus had to depend on team play and working together to win. 46 - - ji SCHEDULE Hillside 13 Regional 21 Somerville 7 Regional 6 Caldwell 6 Regional 25 Roselle 6 Regional 14 Union 12 Regional 19 Bernards 19 Regional 7 Linden 13 Regional 7 Rahway 33 Regional 7 .r X.JJtPi Did he make it? This was a time when Regional was com- pletely united and loyally followed the team throughout the entire season. For many years we have been on top, winning county and even state tourna- ments. However, the worth of a team is not measured by their victories. The boys on this year ' s team have shown great sportsmanship, although the basketball season has not been a good one. In many cases ,the team has rallied to victory when it was considered impossible. We are proud of these Regionalites. 48 BASKETBALL SCHEDULE Westfield 48 Regional 63 Pkrinfield 54 Regional 45 Hillside 72 Regional 63 Rahway 75 Regional 44 Linden 49 Regional 62 Alumni 42 Regional 45 Westfield 46 Regional 57 Union 70 Regional 54 Plainfield 53 Regional 40 Roselle Park 79 Reg ional 63 North Plainfield 30 Regional 56 Union 53 Regional 49 Edison 54 Regional 52 Linden 50 Regional 38 St. Mary ' s 78 Regional 44 Rahway 52 Regional 36 Jefferson- 69 Regional 42 Summit 55 Regional 69 County Tournament St. Mary ' s 67 Regional 26 Tsk. tsk, don ' t grab! Two of our graduate lettermen are goi ng to make base- ball their career. Pitcher, Bill Peterson, has been signed by the Boston Braves and Richard Tomasetti is being considered by Detroit. Three lettermen return for the 1952 season, Joe Pepe, Bob Thwaites and Charlie Schaffernoth, who was selected as the catcher on the county team and several state teams. Even though the losses over-shadowed the wins, the girls showed good lively spirit through the entire season. Little-but-mighty Helen Wanko made a good share of the points and her team-mates, Stella Bialecki, Carol Werle, and Julia Walsh, were there to lend a helping hand. This year saw the beginning of a girls ' ref-ing class for basketball. This class will be continued next year, and with the morning practice sessions, next year ' s team shows promise of a good season. 55 V t FEATURES Window Painting huh UkHimm Senior Play Square Dance Pep Rally I ■ fi v° l . . . fc e Qanmcd Grab your partners and around you go 58 1 H l As smooth as Hawaiian nights- ©y on I , Prefly-eyed babies.
