Warming up is a process to which the team quickly llecomes ac- West has undefeated 1968 season with 9-0 record West Tigers handed veteran coach Ray Klootwyk his sixth career championship year in addition to an undefeated season. There were thirty-two letter winners of which twelve were juniors, including powerful Mike Cassadei. VVest was assured a share of the Illini-8 crown when they defeated Lockport West 13-0. They obtained sole possession of the title on November 2, 1968, when joliet Central lost a game to Argo which put them out of the run- ning. It was the first Illini-Eight title won hy VVest in its five year history, HTinyH Bob Burrus played the key role in Westls defense. Bob made the all-state team and the all-Chicago area team. He and his de- fensive teammates held the opposition to an average of 129 yards per game. Tom McKeon also made the all-Chicago area team. Tom was the top receiver with a total of 455 yards in 24 catches. He was also the leading scorer gaining 49 points. It was surely a winning year. VVest's powerful offense swung into full force in this play against the Mark ran four straight ground plays resulting in a touchdown. In nine Raiders, Randy Casserilla handed off to Nlark Hammond for this gain. carries he gained 36 yards for an average of four yards in each carry. J . Brent tlunier received two fine hlocks from his teammates as hc started his run. Tiger power was quite evident that night as Vest gained 316 yards overall. Homecoming victory adds to Week of excitement Joliet VVest won its second consecutive Homecoming game in the fall of 1968. This game was loaded with everything from fisticuffs to many Kankakee Eastridge errors. It resulted in a 27-0 decision for the Tigers, their third straight shutout and tenth game without defeat. Tom Nlclieon, the hero of the game, scored two touchdowns by receiving two passes of 16 and 89 yards, Mark Hammond and jim Huey also made a touchdown each. Tom Wimberly kicked three conversions to make the total of 27 points. West's powerful defense held the opponents to a total of only 56 yards and seven first downs. Key defensive plays were made hy Brent Gunicr and john Egly, hoth of whom blocked pass at- tempts. This stiff defense characterized the typical kind of game played by West. Sport
