Statements and rebuttals echoed as captain Scott Becker led his varsity debate team to victory at the Thornton Invitational Tournament. Miss Kathy Kelly coached the winning team, 'KGaurd or guardiy, Comma or no comma'?', Rules of spelling and grammar prepared fresh- men for mechanics in compositions. Central ideas and topics absorbed their imaginations. Courses familiarized students with fundamental precepts of more advanced courses. Interpretations of Edna St. Vincent Millay and Robert Frost enveloped thoughts of sopho- mores in speech classes. junior literature courses concentrated on Mark Twainls favorite, Huck Finn, and his flight down the Big Muddyf' Paula Meyer and Karen Kraker study 'methods of writing before applying themselves to their term papers.

Taking interest, Miss Gibbs attempts to straighten-out the two befuddlcd students with some helpful advice. Academies Negro history researched by Crandall and Crook Black and white students need to be taught Negro history in order to lessen fric- tionf' remarked instructor Nlr. Richard Crook. Sharing the same thought, superintendent Dr. Arthur Bruning commanded the talents of Mr. Crook and teacher Mr. Marshall Crandall to plunder the depths of dusty archives. Sweat and toil during summer months brought forth The Negro in American Historyg A Guide for Teachers which supplemented American His- tory courses at VVest. Central and East also re- ceived the study guide. Imaginary cannons and muskets thundered and crashed as the spirit of ,76 was revived in Miss Shirley Gibbs, X-L'. S. history class. American yankees and British lobsterbacks clashed on paper as the Revolutionary War was reenacted for the first time in Westls five year history. Military stratagems were planned and researched by students. When the bloodshed ended, America was free from K'King and countryf, Safaries into the nooks and crannies of the library often helped student Sherlock Holmes, track down information on people or events. To the social science department, the most im- portant word of 1969 was 'Sresearchf' 'A'l'wo heads are better than one. Gregory Kane and Margo Dolhof study for a threatening world history test.
