Among the articles donated to the Dixon State School hy the Future Home- Karen Krueger. Adoption of a family was a unique project undertaken by the Future Homemakers of Amer- ica. Groceries, clothing, and other articles were presented to the needy family. FHA performed other community services including the dona- tion of clothes, soap, toys, and similar items to the Dixon State School. Club members also presented the joliet Youth Commission with 1,500 Christmas cookies and St. joseph's Hos- pital with Easter baskets for the children. Cadet teaching, a program in which stu- dents gain actual teaching experience, involved , almost half of the thirty FTA members. Future teachers also gained experience through par- ticipation in the clubls program of tutoring slow students in areas such as math and reading. Representatives of West's FFA garnered third place honors in both the soil judging and grain judging contests held for Will County schools. Club member Ken Phelps captured in- dividual honors at the Mazon FFA Fair. His entry in the steer competition received a blue ribbon designating first place. 145

Chess Club members participating in ,an after school tournament are Dave Braun, Tom Keith, and Fred Coleman. Members challenged each Tim Stapay, Pete Bauer, Randy Kleck, Wayne Schlosser, Bill Knighton, other Tuesdays after school in games of conyentional chess. History, Math, and Chess Clubs meet after school History Club members held bi-monthly meetings, one of which consisted of a history forum. At these round-table meetings, history discussions were held by the members. Members conducted research on the his- tory of the French period in Illinois. High- lighting this club project was guest speaker, Mr. john j. Shauer of the Illinois Historical Society. Mr. Shauer spoke to the history enthu- siasts about French forts and Indians of Illinois. Math Club met each week to participate in math-related activities. Informal meetings gave members the opportunity to enjoy games designed for mathematical appreciation. Formal meetings included the presentation of math programs by guest speakers and individual members. Chess Club members devoted their after- school activity period to chess tournaments among themselves. Games of three-dimensional chess added new challenges to the classic game. an .
