Sixteen tournaments were en- tered, ten of the tournaments found Westis de- baters capturing first place honors. Two of the more impressive showings were the first place finish in the Eisenhower Tournament, where 41 debate teams competed, and a similar placing in the prestigious New Trier Tournament of Champions. Scott Becker, a varsity debater for four years, play Rubens, jerry Mahon, and Stan VVil- liams anchored the varsity debate team. jay was named the top speaker in the Maine West Tourna- rncnt and jerry was cited as the second finest speaker at the Eisenhower Tournament. Financial support for the debate program was acquired by sponsoring Radio Day. During Radio Day the debaters assumed the responsi- bilities of program production on station VVIRC. Profits gained from this project ex- ceeded one thousand dollars. Honoring outstanding speech students, Wests chapter of the National Forensic League operated under an affiliated charter for four years. This year, however, NFL was awarded a full charter due to the excellent showing of NFL members in speech activities. Thespians, headed by President Lamar McCallum, were also contributors to the suc- cess of speech activities. Their enthusiastic work backstage, on stage, and in other areas were essential parts of speech programs.
