West takes second place in Aurora tournament Competing in two holiday tournaments, jo- liet West combined a slow start and near per- fect finish to capture the consolation prize in the Nlorris Holiday Tournament and the second place title in the Aurora East Tournament. Losing their first game to Newark, Joliet VVest fought back with wins over Farragut and Coal City to capture the consolation match at Morris. In their second tournament, VVest bat- tled to the championship bracket only to lose to host Aurora East by six points. With a trio of talented seniors, VVest added two rising juniors, Ted Pohlman and Dick Fick, to the starting line up. Outstanding in both tour- naments was guard Craig Spiers, who led jo- liet West in scoring during the tournaments. Tigers capture second in Illini-Eight Conference Upon dropping a key game to Lockport Central by a score of S4-66, Alolict XVest saw its title hopes end, but took assurance in captur- ing the second-place berth in the Illini-Eight Conference. Having lost only three games in conference play, the Tiger varsity basketball team finished the season with a conference record of T-3. Highlighting the season were the showdowns with Lockport Central and Catholic High. Joliet VVest,s Craig Spiers and jerry Mabry were named to the 1969 first-string all-con- ference team.
