Pat Kosmerl lends a bit of help to Jane Williams in the sometimes stumping world of chemistry. NHS and AFS Strive to Serve the School Instilled with a sense of pride and accom- plishment, members of the National Honor So- ciety attended the initiation banquet. These outstanding students received membership in the honor society on the merits of scholastic attainment, extra-curricular participation, and good character. NHS undertook a book sale at the beginning of each semester. Members of the society of- fered tutoring to students in need of assistance. Fifteen members were chosen to compete for appearance on the educational show, 1t's Aca- demic. At the preliminary screening they were bombarded with questions on math, history, and English. Rich Rawlins, Connie Rajala, and Scott Baskin were elected to represent West on the program. They won first place by defeating Joliet Central and Oak Park-River Forest. Dedicated to the cultural exchange of for- eign countries, the American Field Service worked diligently to raise funds. In order to earn half the amount it takes to host a foreign student, the club sold donuts, pins, and under- class pictures. AFS members corresponded with Steve Converse, who was sent to Chile, through the Americans Abroad Program. Steve enjoyed a year of studying and discovering the people and country of Chile. Yearbook Grows Again Room 247 harbored the bustling head- quarters of the yearbook, Alpha Omega. Armed with fifteen staff members, the yearbook began with an extensive sales campaign. Sales surged to a total of more than 1,520 subscriptions. Alpha Omega members valued time as an essential factor in creating the'240 page annual. Pictures were scheduled, information was com- piled, and deadlines were met. This staff agreed on new designs, changes, and the addi- tion of twenty more pages in the book. Annually presented by the yearbook staff, the Coronation of the ideal senior girl was en- acted. This Christmas Coronation of Miss Alpha Omega unfolded with the lively music of the stage band, a fine medley by the Madrigals, and the procession of the candidates. Suspense ran high until commentator, Bruce Fritz, an- nounced Barb Myers, Miss Alpha Omega 1966- 67. Staff photographer, Steve Schwartz, cap- tured the happy moment as editor-in-chief, Dave Humphreys, presented Barb with a dozen red roses.
