Steve Schwartz is enjoying his conversation with sponsor Mr. Dorick following an intramural basketball game. Basketball enrollment showed a great increase in student interest this year. 4 . Softball action is in the offing as the catcher and umpire await the swoosh and slam that signals the arrival of a fast pitch. Intramurals Flourish Intramural Athletics at J. T. West had as its founding purpose, according to Mr. Dorick, to provide boys who do not participate in inter-school athletics with an opportunity to en- gage in sports and recreational activities with boys of their own age, size, and ability. Under the leadership of Mr. Dorick, intra- murals was one of West's most popular after dinner activities. Popular team sports such as football, bowling, volleyball, and softball rated high in student participation, but basketball seemed to stand out above them all. In addition, the program offered horseshoes, chess, checkers, ping pong, tennis, and golf. Attesting to the success of this program was the in- creased enrollment-doubled in basketball and tripled in bowling. Individuals who were outstanding in spe- cific events received trophies, and letters were awarded to members from each league who scored the greatest number of intramural points. All in all, it was a year of healthy growth for the intramural crew. Dan Fox gives a quick glance to a bystander after the com- pletion of a game of ping pong.
