Taking first at District in the high jump and placing a respectable fifth in the pole vault, Rory represented both himself and his school very well. Poised and ready for the crack of the starting gun is Stan Mazon, West's out- standing all-around track man. From this typical stance, Mazon propelled him- self to a brilliant series oftrack Irecords, perhaps the most outstanding being the decathelon championship and his remarkable District record of 49.9 seconds forthe quarter mile.

This was to be the debut of a new school conference. No one was absolutely sure of what the Illini 8 would be like. Would the competition be tough? Who would emerge as the power- house? All this remained to be seen. West had a strong varsity team in that it had many returning lettermen. But there were few that were ready to predict the fate of the sophomore squad. More than half the boys had never been in a meet before. Despite its uncertain beginning, the soph squad made a good showing. Under the compe- tent leadership of Mr. Swank and his assistants, plus the aid of returning lettermen, the Tiger Cubs compiled a record that rivaled that of the varsity. Winning nine of eleven meets in addi- tion to the Conference title, the Cubs did indeed nip closely at the heels of the varsity Tigers. ,:.:, Y, g 3 K6 ' iti --1.5 .'., It A7': 4 ' Bob Cipolles remarkable ability was visible as he vaulted high hurdles gif' 'Mg for the Tiger Sophs at Joliet Central.West won the meet 66-52. l l FROSH- SOPH TIGER.CUBS-- FRONT ROW: Rich Piunti, John Brent Gunier.
