Tigers Take 5 Titles When the winter season came to a close, so did the era of the South Suburban League as far as Joliet schools were concerned. Spring of 1966 marked the secession of J. T. H. S. from the South Suburban and the outset of the newly formed Illini 8 Conference. As the varsity cindermen moved outside, the track team for 1966 began to solidify. Head coach Roger Swank, with the assistance of Coaches Hal Wimberly and Richard Samlin, laid a basis for future victories. Track season pro- gressed and so did the Tigers. Dual meet wins totaled eleven with no losses. Two of the great- est performances in Joliet history-that of Walt Kimble and Stan Mazon-propelled West to the District crown. Mazon with 49.9 seconds for the quarter mile and Kimble with 10.2 seconds for the 100 yard dash set new District records. It was truly a fine season for track. Each coach made an effort to work in his most qualified field. Agility and speed lend grace to the movements of Robert McLurkin as he skims the low hurdles at West. John Ogg is apparently suspended in air as he is caught in the act of pole vault- ing. Testimony to John's skill is his place of first for pole vault in the lllini 8 Conference meet with a vault of ll feet 6 inches. l

Cas- Freshmen Tigers Capture City Championship The boys played as a unit instead of as individuals. This and hard practice were the real factors behind our successful season, was the comment of Coach Edwards when asked what was behind the freshmen's nine-one sea- son. Team work was the basis of the defensive fielding which sent every area team to defeat. Neither mudding fields or unco-operative spring weather could hold down the freshmen. Tiger batting clobbered East, beating them ten to nothing and eight to five. Central suffered a similar 'fate losing to West fifteen to two and six to five. These four games won the freshmen the city championship. One game lost to a tough Argo team by a single run was the only mar on the freshmen record. SCORES West . . . 15 J.
