West's Nine Exploded to Win District Getting as many as fourteen runs in a single game, the Tigers are known for their hitting. Rapping out a single in the West-Central game, Frank Panish helps reinforce this reputation.

Varsity Tennis Team Keeps Tradition Tennis is one of the most demanding sports physically, in the opinion of Bob Richards, Olympic champion. Lead by Randy Pollock and Dale Finkle and coached by Mr. Smunt, the varsity tennis team compiled a ten- four season to win fourth in the conference. With this second straight winning season in a row, the Tigers won a second place in a field of twelve teams at the Ottawa District Tourna- ment. Not to be outdone by the varsity, the sophomore team was second in the new Illini 8 conference with a twelve-two season record. Westis Tiger Cubs achieved this record while learning such tactics as precision hitting of sideline markers, thusforcing the opponent to weave back and forth across the court like a runaway Agena rocket. Mickey Johnson swings a powerful bat to move the Tigers one run and Regional Tournaments Getting the big run in the big game was the habit of the Tigers in the 1966 baseball season. Capitalizing on this, the team won eight of its last eleven games, boosting its record to eight wins and ten losses. Among those to go down in the Tigers string of victories was the then- league champions Argo. Coach Miller was pleased as his nine played aggressive ball. Led' by Jim Brummund and Mike Cookas, the Tigers were a threat to any pitcher. Effective pitching of Frank Panish and Bob Polancich pushed the team on to win the District and Regional tournaments. One run kept the Ti- gers from winning the Sectional championship game with Rock Island. West also contributed to the first Illini of All-Conference Team with four outstanding ball players. These Tigers, pictured below, are Mike Cookas, Bob Polancich, Dean Burtch, Jim Brummund.
