Sophs Have Balance Speed, power, and the ability to strike through the air comprised the three threats of Mel May,s sophomore Tigers. Their seven-two record showed all three threats were used in West's bid for Illini 8 conference championship. Versatile Rick Chizmark's option around end was balanced by Brent Gunier's and Randy Casserillais steady and productive running. West,s co-ordinated aggressive line controlled by a responsible quarterback were strong factors in sophomore wins. SOPHOMORE SCORES West . . . 20 Joliet Cath. . West . . . 25 Glenbard E. . Hard Work and Dedication Gives Cross Country a Winning Season, Following a summer of hard work and dedicated practice, which included no less than two 10 mile marathons per week, the Cross Country Tigers launched themselves into the 1966-67 season. Under the watchful eye of Coach Swank, the Frosh-Soph and Varsity squads emerged from a stage of relative uncer- tainty into teams of unusually good balance. Mr. Swank remarked that the squads had fine depth, and as a result the thinclads weren't dependent upon any one man. ' Needless to say, the Tiger harriers pro- duced some fine talent. Thinclads Rich Skoff and Chip Smith logged some of the best varsity times ever recorded on West,s two mile course at Inwood Park. Tigers Steve Palmer and Mike Roath placed consistently in the top five out of an average sophomore field of twenty men. Records of eight-two for varsity, nine-two for sophs, plus the crown of Conference champs and Joliet Area Meet championship proved the fine ability of the cross country team. Strenuous practice takes its toll as Greg Riffel completes his quota of paced laps for the day. As practice draws to a close, the agony of the last lap is climaxed only by the sat- isfaction of the finish. VARSITY HARRIERS--FRONT ROW: Charles Smith, Rich Skoff, Mike McLaren, Wayne Ingmire. SECOND ROW: Roger Wyss, Greg Riffel, Bill Nordmark, Steve Palmer, THIRD ROW: Coach Swank, Paul Scholtes, Larry Seiler, Mike Kessler, Tom Lorenc. Anxiety flashes across the faces of Chip Smith and Mike McLaren as the varsity squad awaits the start of the Joliet Area Meet. Others joke and set the team at ease, but the runners agree that this is perhaps the hard- est part of the meet.
