West's offense grinds into gear against Kankakee Westview. Title Hopes Still Burn At West's Homecoming Title Hopes Still Burn , read the Joliet Herald-News. Wins in four of West's last five games was the reason behind the headlines. With homecoming week at West the football team was tied for second and had a chance for the first place trophy. Only two games to win, and West could capture the first Illini 8 cham- pionship. i Despite a cold wind, West's student body came out in-mass to see the first varsity foot- ball team with a winning conference record. Finding a seat at the homecoming game was hard because the capacity crowd didn't leave an empty seat in the stands. t 4 In two hours of tough crunching football the Kankakee Kayhawks defeated the Tigers nine- teen to thirteen, disappointing the homecoming crowd. Nevertheless, the team finished with its first winning conference season with a four- three slate. Quarterback Mahoney brings the crowd to its feet as his pass to Hoffman is completed late in the fourth quarter.
