154 Seniors Set Fine Examples During the past four years, there have been students who, through various efforts, have merited recognition. Dave Humphreys, editor-in-chief of the yearbook, was also a member of NHS. Dave was treasurer of A Cappella Choir and a Madrigal. West's outstanding basketball player, John Geist, added NHS to his list of contributions. President of A Cappella Choir, Madrigals, and leading roles in speech presentations as well as operettas were among Dave Milleris activities at West. AFS exchange student, Steve Converse, has also ap- peared in several plays at West. Steve was a member of Westis winning cross country and track teams. GAA president, Eileen Farrell, was junior class girls' social chairman and a member of NHS. Mark Pederson, president of Student Council, also appeared in several school plays. Ready with her skates, Eileen leaves for an evening out with some friends. Along with his Student Council work, Mark also has been interested in art. Here, he adds finishing touches to a sculpture. Steve points out to Dave some Chilean techniques of guitar playing

Market places such as this, bustling with activity, were familiar sights for Steve. This market was only blocks away from Steve's home. Steve Goes to Chile On March 2, 1966, Steve Converse left for a year that was to bring him unforgetable ex- periences and long lasting friendships. After a series of AFS interviews, Steve was chosen to represent the United States and Joliet West in Chillan, Chile. Steve attended the Seminary of Chillan where he studied twelve courses. Steve felt school was more difficult in Chile. Class' par- ticipation was at a minimum' lectures wer , e often lengthy. Chilean teens were the same, however for lfun and parties were much a part of Steve's life. Family life was more formal for Steve ibut he became very attached to his famil and Y his home away from home. Steve made many friends during his year in Chile. At the town plaza, Steve poses with his two best friends. On his last day in South America, Steve waits at Santiago airport with his little sisters and brother to say some last good-byes. 153
