Science Labs Stimulate Curiosity and Discovery Through experimentation, science students strived to gain an understanding of scientific theory. Classroom work gave students a basic knowledge of facts, but in lab work they applied these facts, to form their own ideas. Physics classes demonstrated the light theories of wave and particle and were encour- aged to form their own conclusions based on ex- perimental data. Biology students analyzed dif- ferent facets of life and then related these to one another in establishing the unity of the liv- ing world. Chemistry students explored the properties of different elements, thus expanding their foun- dation of scientific understanding, while physi- ology experiments on the cat aided students in their study of the processes of the human body. Mr. Hopkins, department chairman, and his staff placed the responsibility of learning with the student himself, as he achieved a greater understanding of science through experimenta- tion.

Pat Kosmerl attains greater understanding of mathematical concepts by using a physical model. ill N West students gained knowledge of the in- ternational language of mathematics through the math department. Participants in the math pro- gram furthered their education in general mathematics as well as in the highly technical courses of college algebra and analytical geom- etry. Miss Fisher, department head, supervised math training which offered students a basis for scientific achievements as well as an insight into possible fields of higher study. Work in special projects was made possi- ble through the math center. Reference and re- search books, as well as geometric building materials, activated imaginative thinking in creating pictures of abstract ideas. These re- sources gave students an opportunity for creativity and the means to support their origi- nality with their own projects. Comprehension in depth of the mathematical language was im- parted to West students through the math department.
