Guidance Mapped Present and Future for West Students 128 Mrs. Hedstrom offers advice to one of her counselees. Miss Louck consults files for a student's academic record. Under the leadership of Mr. Charles Woolard, the guidance department led students in planning their academic and vocational lives. Through group and individual conferences with their counselors, students decided what courses to take in anticipating a specific vocation or college education. Counselors and students also worked together in interpreting grades and test scores as a possible means for a more definite formation of future plans. Two new counselors, Mr. Meredith and Mr. Coleman, were added to West's counseling staff this year. They, along with the other counse- lors, provided West students with assistance in planning their present and future. Dave Taylor confers with Mr. Meredith concerning his sec- ond semester schedule. ts 'M' ,i , ily V Lg ' xx D ' ', . 130 English Expanded Horizons of Communication Q-.Qu-uw , lQill!lQuap Florence Hummel strengthens her reading comprehension and improves her speed with the aid of a reading machine. Joseph Bennington Thomas E. Burke Clive A. Crum Wilma J. Dryden Elisabeth Eldred Bonnie Fritz William W. Johnson Kathy Kelly Barbara Klasing Scott Becker uses a Perry Mason approach to debate Under Mr. Bennington's chairmanship, the English department expanded horizons of com- munication. English I and II offered an intro- duction to the field of communication as freshmen sought to interpret ideas portrayed through literature and then apply these ideas to their own writing. Sophomore speech taught students the importance of the spoken word. Junior and Senior English courses concentrated upon literature and expository writing as medi- ums -of conveying a purpose, while journalism students found an outlet for their efforts in Tiger Tales and the Alpha Omega. As the fastest growing area within the de- partment, speech arts gave students additional training beyong the limits of first year speech courses. Aspiring actors were provided with opportunities for dramatic interpretation, cul- minated in a special Christmas play. Debate was an exercise in logic and reason, as well as a venture into the field of communication through persuasion.
