Battalion Commander, Bill Pierce, briefs the officers on their assignments. J Sponsor Jane Wyss stencils a poster for a future ROTC event. ROTC Prepares Young Men For Military Service Profiting in a' rigorous education in mili- tary subjects, the ROTC gained practical knowledge. This program laid the foundation for leadership, drill command, military courtesy, and other basic subjects in the four branches of the Armed Forces. Members were instructed in map reading, hygiene, sanitation, first aid, weapons, and military leadership. As the year progressed, the ROTC took on the heavy responsibility of a can drive. These donations were presented to the Salvation Army to be distributed during the Christmas holidays. West's ROTC carried on an extensive door to door campaign. Their efforts showed in the successful collection of over one-third of the cans for the whole city of Joliet. Dan Davis performs the duty of recording new assignments.

This award assembly was the event at which outstanding cadets merited distinct awards. Cadet-Captain Paul Padden received the Chicago Tribune's Silver Tribune Award for military achievement, scholastic attainment, and excellent character. Presented to Cadet Sergeant First Class Lawrence Pollack was the Gold Tribune Award. Other honors were re- ceived by the cadets and the sponsors. Cadets found themselves in full charge on battalion day. Responsibility was delegated to the members of the ROTC. They handled vari- ous technical duties and assignments. Heading the ROTC at West were Major Nelson and MasterfSergeant Swinke.
