W'- ' Peg Bartz and Linda Morris make a sale to Barb Davis for some baked goods af- ter school. Future Teachers Learn Modern Education .Achieving a,career as a teacher was the common goal of the Future Teachers of America. These hopeful members served as guides for the Regional Teachers Convention at West in the fall. They also made plans to visit a state university in the spring and to tour the campus. Programs ran high with interest for the FTA. At one meeting the club was exposed to the Modern Method of Teaching, a new develop- ment in education. Miss Louck presented a pro- gram with an armchair journey of her trip to India and the Far East. Student teachers also gave informative speeches to the club. His- torian Linda Morris gave a review of the na- tional, state, and local chapters of the FTA. Bakery sales boosted the club's treasury and strengthened plans for an FTA retreat in the spring. DE and O Programs Offer Experience in Business Creation of the Distributive Education and Office Occupations Programs made it possible for students to gain a useful experience in the business world. Classes in Distributive Educa- tion provided its members with practice in jobs such as clerks, cashiers, and salesmen. Participants in this program also had schedules made that synchronized their jobs with their schoolwork. Office Occupations students were able to operate up-to-date business machines, type business letters, and learn the correct method of telephone conversation. Members were given the opportunity to work together in typical of- fice situations. Eighteen girls participated in the Office Occupations program in prepara- tion for clerical careers. Mary Smith and John Kinney arrange the showcase outside of their room to show something of interest about the DE club.

114 Mary Jo Jaworski practices diligently on the balance beam. Two rival teammates vie for the tipoff. Barb Kubinski bowls with high hopes for a strike. GAA Tackles a Busy Agenda GAA started in with activities on the first day of the school year with Freshman Day. Of- ficers visited with each class explaining the or- ganization of the Girls' Athletic Association. Their campaign ran for the first week with reg- istering and paying of fees. Christmas arrived, and with it came the visit of Santa Claus to the GAA meeting. In February the club held its initiation. Members who had earned twenty-four points or more were presented with a state GAA pin. Spring also brought the annual Mother-Daughter Tea festivities. Plans were drawn up for a swim- ming party and the selection of two girls to at- tend a leadership camp in Wisconsin.
