Radio Club Builds Skill With Electronics Tuning in nearby stations, the Radio Club at West initiated its first year. Novices to radio banded together to investigate new inno- vations in the world of electronics. Members learned a special theory and code. Construction and wiring techniques were practiced on vari- ous types of equipment. Ham operators enjoyed working with their own equipment. They created projects, even to planning the construction of an antenna and radio at West. Radio Club paused in practice with elec- tronics to participate in a pop bottle drive. Club officers for the year were Paul DeFelice, presidentg Curt Bowen, vice-presidentg Jim Moroz, secretaryg and Ron Appel, treasurer. Ron Appel makes contact with a neighboring station using the code and theory developed specially by the club. i Amateur radio operator, Mike Zoble, turns in a frequency on the electronic facilities ,at the club's disposal. Mr. Myron Klingensmith gives Pam Fitzer a few pointers for success on the slopes. Ski Club Made Excur- sions to Four Lakes Racing down snowy slopes was the breath- taking sport enjoyed by West's first Ski Club. With over a hundred members, the club took advantage of the blustering winter. Members registered and paid a fee to travel to many ski resorts. Three trips were taken to Lyle, Illinois, at the site of Four Lakes. Buffalo Park ski area sixty miles from Joliet was also visited by the Ski Club. Average sized crew of skiers ranged from forty to fifty- five members. Lessons were available for novice skiers, while veterans took off on their own. Ace skier Klingensmith, finds a miniature resort in one of the courts in the school. 107

Key Club officers are Steve Koivula, secretaryg Emil Petrusa, presidentg Jerry Jones, treasurer. Sponsor is Mr. Donald Hein. Key Club Puts Emphasis On Service Involved in community affairs, the Key Club took off on a year of activity. Besides op- erating refreshment stands at the games, the flutter of black and gold pennants could be seen as Key Club members sold them throughout the grandstands. Soap bars were collected by the dozens to be distributed in the Dixon State School. Key Club sponsored coat check workers for the annual entertainment of the Kiwanis Show. Members also acted as runners from Pershing School in the high school referendum. Key Club highlighted their social season with a hayrack ride. Participants from West traveled to the National Key Club Convention at the Edgewater Beach Hotel in Chicago on April 6 and 7. of the many activities of the year that Key Club sponsors is the selling West pennants. Emil Petrusa, president, gives member Gene Nemanich a few on selling these pennants. 109
