Chess Club Organized as a means of teaching, students the fundamentals of playing, chess and as a means of competition for proficient chess players, Chess Club enjoyed a successful year at West with Mr. McClain as the Chess Club sponsor. Mr. Alvarez served as AFS sponsor with Jane Fricke as president, Mary Jor- gensen as vice-president, Jan Hamilton as secretary and Scott Baskin as treasurer. As a money-making project, AFS sold under- class pictures of freshmen, sophomores and juniors. THIRD AlGh8Il1iStS AIIDIIYITIUUS Pl'0hBd the w0l'ld of SCi8IICB Delving into the fields of science not usually studied in the classroom was an important reason students joined the science club, Alchemists Anonymous. Most members, such as Fred Klein, King of AA, and Anita Venzara, Queen, had an intense interest in the scientific nature of the world. P. G. Koutnik sponsored this club which showed a film from the Argonne laboratories at each meeting. These films depicted different areas of research. A one-half hour demon- stration or lecture was given after the film. Alchemists Anon- ymous sponsored Saturday field trips to the University of ROW: Paul Bush, Don LaBorde, Dan DeWitt, Gary Horwitz, Jerry Lane, Norman Hall, Franklin Hall, Pat Donnelly, Marshall Brown, Paul Steinquish. FOURTH ROW: Dave Brown, David Voots, Mike Jolley, Bob Pollack, Tim Reynolds, Mike Marentic, David Hillgs- land, Sydney Lane, Richard Steller, Ray Shroba, Glenn McCarthy, Paul Thran, Jim Moroz. Fred Klein explains his science club project to one of the judges at the annual Science Fair. Chicago, Argonne National Laboratories and the strip mines for fossil hunting.
