Language Clubs Revealed Foreign Cultures Language clubs at Joliet West High furthered a student's education outside of the classroom by bringing students into contact with other cul- tures. These clubs supplemented the classroom work by studying the cus- toms, people and land in which their particular language was spoken. Some typical activities of the Latin, French, Spanish, and German clubs were trav- eling to Chicago to see movies, dining at French or Spanish restaurants, sponsoring a Roman banquet and caroling during the Christmas season. The success of these clubs could not have been accomplished without the aid of their sponsors including: Helle Ajango, German club, Louis G. Students Trained For Military Positions Students enrolled in N.D.C.C. were organized along military lines. Dean Macris served as cadet commander and other students held staff or com- mand positions below him. Major Nel- son's staff included officers and en- listed men who taught courses and others who handled the administration of the unit.
