The Mikado The Mikado was chosen to be,West's first oper- etta, directed under the co-operative guidance of Mr. Roy Johnson CVoca1 Music Departmentj and Mr. Peter Labella QOrchestra Departmentj. This was not the Mikado's premier presentation in Joliet, for many years before, Joliet Central introduced the identical musical to the high school students and public. Since it was very well received, Mr. Johnson decided to give the challenge to West.

One-Act Plays Offer Variety Air Raid and Antic Spring, two of the one-act plays presented in Janu- ary, were directed by students and brought to life on the stage of the Little Theatre. Antic Spring, directed by Conni Rajala, a junior, was just what the title suggested. Six teenagers, an idea for a picnic, and a drive to the woods set the plot for this delight- ful comedy. Confusion and humorous happenings resulting from this outing left the audience charmed by all the antics in Antic Spring. Mark Pederson, also a junior, direc- ted Air Raid. Centering around aver- age American people who lived in a normal everyday town, the plot proved to be anything but normal or average. Bringing an awareness of the ever present threat of war before the audi- ence, this play contrasted sharply with the comedy in Antic Spring. Sue Kempe and Marilou Hoffman, as two housewives, and Bev LaBo1-de and Kathy Canterbury, as typical teens, helped set the plot for Air Raid Contest Play Receives First in State Mr. B. F. Johnston, known throughout the state for his directing talents, presented Camino Real to conclude the evening's entertainmentin the auditorium. This play was Marguerite tDawn Shermanj looked on in amazement as she watched a travel' agent CMark Pedersonb take his dying breaths in Camino Real. also entered in the district speech contest, receiving second place. In the section contest, it received first. Tennessee Williams' characters left the audience wondering about the hidden meanings. Frustration resulted from the walled com munity with no way to the outside and the occupants never giving up the hope of escaping. Ginger tCorinne Ashamyl, Robert CLee Chapmany, Blossom fMol1y Kanej Elbert QTom Mahoneyj, Gwendolyn iJacquie Leissj, and Sam tBi1l Greinerj six teens, decided to go on a picnic in the woods, in Antic Spring.
