Cheryl Carey Sue Kempe A Yearbook As A Beginning and An End September 7 of 1966 marked the beginning of the second year of Joliet West High School. It was a year of contrasts, of the new mingling with the old. New traditions formed and mixed with those remaining from Central. The new yearbook Winter Formal was added to the older Military Ball and Prom dances. A new History Club added extra-curricular activities for students interested in the social sciences, while the traditions of the Joliet Madrigals, Band, and Orchestra were continued. New freshmen, 1969's class of 635 students entered West's halls, while 1966's senior class of 385 prepared to bid them farewell. Sounds of laughter filled these halls while both new and old teachers filed in, brief cases in hand. The beginning of a new year - a year of solitude and crowds, of laughter and tears, of silence and holocaust, of studying and relaxa- tionh. . . September 7, the first day of the second year of West Hig . June 10, 1966, and a year has ended. Exams are over, lockers are emptied and lighthearted students head for a summer away from school. Most freshmen leave the building with a sense of security. They have finally discovered what high school is They leave ready and waiting for the following year. However, many seniors leave with a sense of regret. They have just found out what high school was. Seniors finish their high school years ready to begin their college years. Many get jobs in town, quite a few go to Junior College, and some travel to out-of- state colleges. Although their destinations may be different, they have trav- elled part of the way together. These students have shared a common experience, and have now begun their singular lives. Far from Joliet West High School, they share a common link. School doors have closed - bells stop ringing - a yearbook is opened, and the memories begin. CHERYL CAREY AND SUE KEMPE Co-Editors-in-Chief
