Sophomores Develop Varsity Potential Joliet West's sophomore basketball team experienced a rough year in the South Suburban League. With several games remaining to be played, they had compiled a season record of six wins and twelve losses. Although far from im- pressive, this record alone did not tell the entire story of many close games. During the final moments of the Central- West game, tension rose as both teams battled for victory with precious seconds ticking away. When the game was finished, the scoreboard showed that West had lost by only four points. West also suffered defeat at the hands of the Thornton five by a slim margin of two points, and Kankakee edged out the Tigers in their bid for victory by just one point. West's sophomores did have some glorious moments to redeem themselves. In the season's first game, the Tigers nearly doubled the total points scored by the sophomores from Elgin. After being beaten by the Argo Argonauts by four points the first time, the Tigers defeated them in a second contest by six points. Coach Edwards' Tigers defeated the Kingsmen once easily and came within five points of repeating the East siders fate near the close of the season. Likewise, they made up for a five point deficit from the first game against Lockport Central by winning the second con- test by seventeen points. Other victories came against Blue Island and Adlai Stevenson fa non-conference gamej. 103
