OO Close Scores and Outstanding Players Identify Basketball Season Although West's record may betray the success of the season, the players themselves may be proud. Scores in games such as Joliet Central 52 - West 49 and Joliet Catholic 55 - West 53 were heartbreaking but promising. Barry Spiers and Jeff Woods were the only two lettermen returning as regular players. Team effort depended on these two boys, and they capably fulfilled the responsibility. Exceptional juniors, such as John Geist and Stan Mazon, paved the way for an even more successful season next year. Mike McLaren, an outstanding sophomore playing on the varsity team, won recognition from players and coaches alike. Especially notable was the Argo game in which Mike scored the final point making the score Argo 57 - West 58. That was Friday December 10, and on Saturday Mike returned to be high scorer when West defeated East 61 to 48. Single achievements, however, were not the deciding factor. Working as a team, these boys achieved winning games, close losses and the respect of their classmates.
