aWords are but the Signs of Ideasn Students in English I study Mythology. as well as grammar and composition. David Oliver, Hazel Severson, and Pat Seeman read stories of Greek gods to the class. -E xg Miss Eldred lectures on the fine points of composition and theme writing in her College Prep English Class. The English Department is working on a spe- cial project called The Sequential Skills Pro- gram in addition to teaching the usual subject matter. This program was developed when it was found that many college freshmen were flunking because of their lack of proficiency in English composition. The Sequential Skillsu program is the result of two years of study and investigation at Central Campus. It stresses writ- ing, reading, listening, speaking, and library skills. Through this program the students at Joliet West High School will be readier to face the challenge of college work. Pictured are students of Mr. McClain's College Prep English Class making use of one of the light courts as a class room. Mrs. Fritz instructs students in her X English III team-teaching class as to the different topics which they may choose for a theme. 10

MATHEMATICS, THE LANGUAGE GF SCIENCE Seated at his desk making out report cards is Mr. Edwards in his GENERAL MATH CLASS. Students in general math classes learn to appreciate our system of mathematics. Here they see how mathematics developed and why the system we use is best. The math department has something entirely new this year--a math center or laboratory which is surrounded by the mathematics class rooms. Students may come here to do research using the many math books. Also available for students' use in the center is a quantity of programmed material for learning. Using these materials, a student may progress at his own rate and study on his own a topic not covered in class. The center contains a work bench equipped with hammers, saws, and other tools and materials which students and teachers use to make models to illustrate mathematical ideas. The visitor to the center would see what appears to be gaily colored decorations hanging from the ceiling and stored in glass cases, but each illustrates an interesting mathematical idea. The X-Algebra III students participated in an interesting enrichment project. Each studied a programmed unit on logic prepared by the University of Illinois Secondary School Mathematics Committee. Robert Hase and Nancy Ruttle work at the board to prove that opposite angles in a parallelogram are equal. A student in GEOMETRY CLASS receives instruction in a broad field of math. Shown at the board proving a theorem in TRIGON- OMETRY CLASS is Mr. Kistner. Students find that trigonometry is much more than just the study of triangles and their functions. Seen working with the number line are Linnet Lightner and Marc Taylor. X-ALGEBRA I students learn about such things as logic, sets, fundamental properties of numbers, and properties of equalities. 11
