The community college is one of our finest efforts in the attempt to attain this goal. Gpen to all people, offering something of interest to each, it is truly an example of the American concept in its highest form. The young student beginning to work toward a four-year degree and the housewife enrolled in a flower arranging course the woman working for her R. N. and the businessman learning more effective means of manage- ment through a night course . .. these people may not seem to have much in common. But they are all members of our community, and they are entitled to the realization of their educational needs. This diversity is what we, in the Shield of 1976, are attempting to show. :. -51' ii ,. -xx i . P 4 W . ax: 945 if g. s . ' U- A- ' - xnxx K, Q-.-. For several years. however, under the direction of Robert Mallary and Rosaline Stone, the JC Players have built an excellent reputation for themselves and for the college's drama department. Playhouse '76 was dedicated on February 18 prior to the first performance of The American Dame. Ms. Stone and Mr. Mallary, at the dedication ceremonies, vowed to continue efforts to make the proposed Fine Arts building a reality. f David Garrick was performed in 1907, nine years before the post-graduate school at JTHS took the name Joliet Junior College. The plot told of a small town girl who came to New York to be on Broadway. Unfortunately, the theatre in which she found a job was being torn down. Her sailor boyfriend, a talented song writer, decided that the show should be moved to his battleship. After complications involving lovers' quarrels, everything ended - in the manner of all good musicals - hap- pily. Director: Rosaline Stone Music Director: Lawrence E. As the Golden Mile crept closer, and new homes mushroomed across I-Ioubolt, our college finalized plans for a trail through its woods and along the lake. Those of us who took the time to walk along the trails found a peace and quiet that was reminiscent of the early years of our nation. Wildlife found a haven here, and the fish were almost big enough for catching . . . The major national award given to the most valuable community college cager is called the Wills- Wagstaff Award, in honor of Coach Wills and Floyd Wagstaff, the twojunior college coaches who hold the all-time records for games won. isa E DEDICATE THE HIELD TO MISS SUSAN WOGD Susan Wood has dedicated more than 30 years of her life to Joliet Junior College. She was the only woman ever to be chief executive of the college. Since her retirement, she has worked voluntarily to compile a record of .UC alumni and to learn as much as possible about the students who have received a portion of their education at .luco. During the Bicentennial year, Susan wrote Joliet Junior College: lts Past- A Prologue for its Future, a pictorial history of the college. For her many years of service and for the impact she has had on the lives of .UC students, the staff of the Shield dedicates this volume. O m Q00 K :ku fx' ':-.- 'M' Qs x . The staff of the Shield, in emphasizing here naturc's small wonders which go unnoticed by most of us, submits a plea for greater awareness of what our country can be 4 . . il' we all exercise a little care. The Staff 2 YO R YEARBGGK S AFF We hope that you have enjoyed your trip through the 1975- 76 year at Joliet Junior College. The Shield will be your permanent time machine to carry you back in memory again and again to what, hopefully, were happy days and evenings on the college campus. When you look through this book and see the faces of your friends, classmates and instructors, how many emotions will you experience'?'? How many little side trips of memory will you take'?'? This yearbook isn't only paper and ink. lt is a chronicle of a period in your life. When you go through its pages in the future, we hope that you feel once again the anticipation and the challenge you felt as a student, The challenge for the Shield staff has been to try to capture, in a few minutes of real time, the essence of an entire year. The year was a special year, for it was marked by national recognition of our school's place in the educational history of our country. And it marked, for all of us, the 200th birthday of the nation. Perhaps neither of these events has had much importance for you. But the year as a whole, and the part of it that was Joliet Junior College has been ab- sorbed into your life and has become a part of you. May that part of you continue to make your future richer and brighter and better. ... And may the '76 Shield help to rekindle the glow when it dwindles.
