THE GYPSY Oh, put me out on the dusty trail, Let the wild wind toss my hair; Eet me roam the hills in the untamed gale, Let me sleep with the flowers there. Let the golden sun kiss my wind-burned face, Let the moon be my only lamp; Let me run with the breeze in a hard-won race While the stars watch over my camp. What care I for the rich man’s gold When the wind is rushing by? For my heart is young, and my blood is bold, And God looks down from the sky. So put me out on the dusty trail, With Heaven my only goal; Let me wander through grass-green wood and dale; Let the sky be the bonds on my soul. —Ruth Denning, ’32. to %WJZ1 1 to WJTA t.2 Forty One ( FIRST ROW—Puddicombe, Rluth, Sessions, Switzer, Mortvedt, Parks, Allan, Timm, Barns, Munch, SECOND ROW—Hoffnmn, tL Krusemai% Groth, Pettigrew, Pillatt, Doxsee, Huey, Ageton, Hotson. BOYS’ SWIMMING TEAM Seventy Two neroy. mE3 rjk BOB STEPHEN Robert “Bob” Stephen, star track and football man, can readily be called Joliet’s outstanding athlete since Pug Rentner. Bob has been competing in track and football since entering as a freshman. He does well with the discus, holding records at Clinton, Iowa, and for the district meet. He has not been beaten in the shot for the last three years and holds the state record for this event. Bob was also a football player. He was chosen all-conference tackle in ’32, ana also all-state tackle. Coach Doug Mills believes he is the best tackle in high school football. One of the best football games that Stephen ever played in his four years of competition was against West Aurora this last season. West Aurora’s two all- state, all-conference halfbacks could not gain an inch through his side of the line. The state meet at Champaign, May 21, was run off in perfect track weather, and Bob made use of it to crack his last year’s shot record of 50 feet, 6 inches, with a toss measuring 51 feet, 11 1-8 inches. He also took second place honors in the discus with a heave of 124 feet, 5 inches. nfiov- an igv. wk Seventy Three Boys’ Athletics HEAVYWEIGHT FOOTBAEE Joliet finished in third place although they held West Aurora, the conference champs, to a 6 to 6 tie. Lee Strappazon and Bob Stephen were chosen on the coaches’ all-conferen ce team. The stellar playing of both these boys helped the squad out many a time. A broken shoul¬ der suffered by Earl Pederson in the 12 to 0 victory over Rockford, last year’s conference champs, handicapped the team for the rest of the season. A 58 to 6 victory over West Chicago was one of the largest scores ever rolled up hy a Joliet team. Paul Savich was elected captain for 1932; and with a squad of six regulars back the prospects for next year are exceptionally good. LIGHTWEIGHT FOOTBAEE The 1931 season was the first that the Lightweights have ever finished under third place since Coach Wykoff took them over in 1923. Injuries along with ineligibility took their toll from the ranks, and the absence of a good forward passer as well as a punter were also felt. The team, while not up to standard, played to the best of their ability a fighting game of football. All the games were fairly close in score with the exception of the Elgin game. HEAVYWEIGHT BASKETBALL Coach Mills had but one regular, Captain Jay Wardley, to start the 1931-32 season. The team started winning from the start and did not stop until it had won the first undis¬ puted conference championship for Joliet since the conference was organized in 1912. The season’s record was 16 games won and 3 lost. A sensational victory over Decatur, the 1931 state champs, in a charity game, and two decisive victories over Elgin, Joliet’s traditional rival, were the highlights of the season. Captain Wardley and Jimmie Furlong were the unanimous choice of the coaches for the all-conference team. Augie Beltzner and Don Jones were picked on the second team, and Louis Kenney was given honorary mention. Don Jones was elected captain for the 1932-33 season. lightweight basketball The lightweight basketball season of 1931-32 was an example of old man “hard luck” himself. Three games were lost by a margin of one point. Rockford, who won the confer¬ ence title, was beaten by Joliet in both games. However the boys finished in second place. The first state tournament for lightweights was held this year; and Coach Wykoff entered his ponies and went through to the semi-finals finishing only four games away from the state championship. HIGH SCHOOL TENNIS Joliet climaxed the brilliant 1931 tennis season by making a clean sweep in the confer¬ ence meet. Jones and Sprague in the singles, and the doubles teams of Carlson-Hoffer and Carlos-Kerr won all matches. Don Jones won the state singles title, defeating such stars as Shostrum, of Parker; Butler, of Danville; and Braun, of Belleville. The 1932 season started slowly, Carlson, Carloss, and Gerkensmeyer, all letter men, being lost by graduation. Fighting to take their places were: Richmond, Hamlin, Johnson, Grolme, Rogers, and Jensen. The team that represented Joliet in the district meet played steady tennis to cop the title. Again Jones won the singles, while Hoffer and Sprague won the doubles title. The toughest break of the season came when Jones became ill on the eve of defending his state championship. The clouds turned to sunshine when Hoffer and Sprague, with steady doggedness and at times brilliant tennis, annexed the state doubles title. It was Joliet’s second state championship in consecutive years. The scores by rounds were: (1) Won from Yeaton-Mercer (Oak Park) 6-8; 6-2; 6-3. (2) Won from Frye-Geer (Vermont) 6-2; 6-1. (3) Won from Engle-Friedman (Lane Tech) 4-6; 6-1; 6-0. (4) Won from Miles-Walker (Hyde Park) 6-3; 8-6. (5) Won from Burgess-Quayle (Oak Park) 6-4; 6-4. to twjz MtKsa i Seventy Four wjta i mwjo £ FIRST ROW—Lindblad, Larson, Schwartz, Klancher, Kirincich. The high school won with forty-five points; the junior college was second with thirty-four and St. Francis third with a score of twenty-one. Fifty-two girls played in the singles tennis matches. The girls in each class played to find the best player in each class, and then the best freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior played each other to win the championship of the school. The horseback riding club meets once a week regularly and also has early morning rides and treasure hunts over the thousand acres of natural beauty in Pilcher Park. Eva Ohlhaver, chairman, Jane Fluey, Helen Jane Fay, Maxine Roehl, Margery Dibell, Gretchen Larking, and Nancy Sherwood rode in the spring horse show sponsored by the city club this spring. to IWJZ 1 fefliPLSI € Seventy Six : V |p§ ' - ■ • ?SkK§SJ ,w. rv-ofc §Sw3 ss KW VC wwumm mm ' • SBfe ; ' • 2SS!3 ?m to € J I f f _ I ' M __t _ t vf f t t i ri i i K7i K K K KtKTK Kti K O? TENNIS This year the Joliet team under the able direction of Coach Paul Becker won the Tennis Division of the Northern Illinois Junior College Conference, having won all of its matches. Ploughing doggedly through a schedule of fourteen dual matches, the tennis team of 1931 emerged with an ever victorious record. So brilliant and steady was their play that all seven conference matches were won 5-0. Non-conference matches with DeKalb, Crane, Valparaiso, and Aurora were also placed in the win column. To climax the season’s play, “Bud” Austin annexed the singles title at Concordia. With Austin, Blogg, Baumgartner, and Baskerville as a nucleus, the 1932 team has again placed an undefeated record on the score books. Carlson, Olson, and Long complete a squad that has won the conference title for the second con¬ secutive year. While the squad played its most brilliant tennis when they beat Valparaiso 8-1, the match that will live long in its memory was the dogged up-hill fight that won the conference title at Concordia. - r v. res Ninety Eight FIRST ROW—Krista], Gigl, Herzcg, Boelinert, Schwartz, Jennings, Miss L. Li Wl r M € J One Hundred One W. A. A. Emblem winners, riders, basketeers, swimmers, and net women composed the W. A. A. this year. Although gym was an elective, more than a hundred co-eds enrolled and went out for sports. The officers of this worthy organiza¬ tion were: Betty Groth, president; Elizabeth McCambridge, secretary-treasurer; and Louise Carlson, social chairman. A picnic with three treasure hunts—one for the riders and two for pedes¬ trians—good eats, and fun galore was held at Betty Groth s home and was an attractive event of the year. Emblems were awarded at this outing by Miss Dorothy Westendarp; the highest awards were received by Beulah Green, Betty Groth, and Phyllis Tyacke, and the small J. C.’s were awarded to Elizabeth McCambridge, Beulah Green, Helen Dudek, Peg Wiswell, Virginia Ddle, Louise Carlson, Mars Wiggam, and Doris Eib. The college riders entered three events in the annual horse show; the five gaited, the three gaited, and the musical chair game. Prosperity hit the Riding club, for it increased about three times the size of last year’s club. The basketeers had good luck this season—especially the freshmen. 1 hey kept a clean slate by winning four and losing no games, while the sophomores won two and lost two. The all-star college team defeated the all-star high school team by a score of 18-15. . Can’t be perfect all the time! The swimmers came in second m the meet, the high school team winning by about ten points. “Love-thirty!” Tennis is still in full swing. But at press time Betty Rob¬ ertson, Phyllis Tyacke, Beulah Green, Betty Groth, and Eorene Baker are still in the race in the J. J. C. tournament. All of these girls have reached the semi-finals. The new officers for the coming year have already been elected.. Louise Carlson will succeed Betty Groth as president. Helen Dudek will be vice presi¬ dent, Elizabeth McCambridge again secretary-treasurer, Zora Sitar the social chairman, and Peg Wiswell the head of sports. EMBLEMS AWARDED BY G. A. A. The emblems for girls earning the required number of points were awarded by the G. A. A. at the picnic at the Boy Scout cabin. Two girls earned the Illinois state award this year with over 2000 points, Caroline Huey and Christine Schwartz, seniors; three girls, Eloise Hunt, senior, and Jane Huey and Viola Larson, juniors, won the state league award with 1600 points; seven earned 1200 points and received J. G. A. A. emblems; and fourteen “J’s” were awarded for 600 points. This year, for the first time, one senior girl was selected as the best all-arouncl athlete in ' the school. To be eligible for this position the candidate must have participated in all the sports on the G. A. A. calendar during her entire high school career. The selection is based on athletic ability, good sportsmanship, leadership, and scholarship. Christine Schwartz was the first girl to receive this honor for the school year 1931-32. INTERCLASS TOURNAMENT HELD A round robin and an interclass tournament were held in hockey, volley ball, basketball, and baseball; a total of four hundred ninety-four girls participated. The freshmen won in hockey. The college freshmen won in basketball with the high school sophomores in second place. 3 hen the all-star high school team chosen from the class teams played the all-star college team, the lattei winning by a score of 18 to 15. TERPSICHOREAN CLUB The Terpsichorean is an organization composed of twenty-six girls selected for their interest and ability in dancing. Members of the club furnished enter¬ tainment for many local organizations. The Dance Program was given on January 29 by the lerpsichorean club and dancing classes of the high school and junior college. K i V.
