SEEDS Your faces I ' ve seen so innocent yet aware Your smiles — jewels like you — rare I see you as seeds, growing with definite reason and rhyme Seeds of various shades and flavors Modern children — products of your time Seeds, each soon to be tossed through out the land hopefully to grow, and flower into a successful man or woman Of this I cannot be sure Your destinies I cannot foretell, but I pray you ' ll do well May God bless you. Love and Luck to the Class of ' 83 From Mrs. Adams STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN There ' s a lady who ' s sure all that glitters is gold and she ' s buying a stairway to heaven. When she gets there she knows if the stores are all closed with a word she can get what she came for. Ooh, ooh, and she ' s buying a stairway to heaven. There ' s a sign on the wall but she wants to be sure ' cause you know sometimes words have two meanings In a tree by the brook there ' s a songbird who sings, sometimes all of our thoughts are misgiven. Ooh. it makes me wonder, Ooh it makes me wonder. There ' s a feeling I get when I look to the west, and my spirit IS crying for leaving. In my thoughts I have seen rings of smoke through the trees, and voices of those who stand looking. Ooh. it makes me wonder, Ooh, it really makes me wonder And it ' s whispered that soon if we all call the tune then the piper will lead us to reason. And a new day will dawn for those who stand long and the forests will echo with laughter. If there ' s a bustle in your hedge • now don ' t be alarmed now, it ' s |ust a spring clean for the May queen. Yes there are two paths you can go by but in the long run there ' s still time to change the road you ' re on. And it makes me wonder. Your head is humming and it won ' t go in case you don ' t know, the piper ' s calling you to )Oin him. Dear lady, can you hear the wind blow, and did you know your stairway lies on the whispering wind And as we wind on down the road our shadows taller than our soul. There walks a lady we all know who shines white light and wants to show how everything still turns to gold. And if you listen very hard the tune will come to you at last. When all are one and one is all to be a rock and not to roll. And she ' s buying a stairway to heaven. POEM TO THE SENIORS On winged feet the four vears pass And nou ue honor our Senior class. Bevond these walls, this town, this state A whole new world now lies in wait You ve much to learn, we re often told Wisdom to gain before vou re old But tonight-before vou turn and go Yom separate wavs. as well we know, En|ov this place, these hours, this school In memory thev II return to vou. TRADITIONAL IVY DA Y Survival of a Landmark (Poem by class poet, Becky Jovanovich) Just a building, made of stone, standing there, so all alone. Throughout the years it took abuse, throughout the years, put its best to use; Admired and owed for its beauty, criticized and downgraded, after serving its duty; Standing majestic and tall, in spite of it all. Students coming and students going, some sentiment, joy and memories showing; Many frightened by its many halls, many grateful for its mighty walls; Lawyers, doctors, tradesmen it has sent, athletes and entertainers from here they went; Housewives and careerwomen it has spun, our citizens of tomorrow from here they ' ve come. Lessons were taught and lessons were learned, many were tough, but all well earned; Some in grammar and some in math, all would lead us in the right path; The most important one of all, was knowing that you, no matter how small; Had a place in this castle of education, without any need of supplication. Now, leaving behind four years well spent, always remembering where we went; Knowing that here, we were all equal, preparing us for our next sequel; Always to remember when, we were called the might Steelmen! Stand tall, Steelmen, for students to come, teach them all, one by one; We leave you now, our dear J.T.C., you ' ve survived another year, the Class of ' 83. Class of ' 83 gave Mrs. Conwy a bracelet for a class gift. MAY 28, 1983 GROWTH AND AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS In a little over 24 hours, we will be leaving Joliet Central High School, our sanctuary, source of learning, and playground for the past four years. This building, this historical monument, this home away from home, has given us silent, unceasing friendship, and has watched us grow into true Steelmen, Now, she must let us go, out to make our way in the world. It would not be right if we left her without a backward glance, so let ' s go back four years to our freshmen days . . . Not too long ago, as beginning freshmen, we started our trek down these long halls a little apprehensive at the thought of high school. It was the beginning of a new life with new challenges, and new friends. We changed a lot during that year. We put away comic books and picked up textbooks. We started to develop our minds and bodies. We hesitantly joined clubs and sports, and realized that we belonged. We were becoming Steelmen. As we traveled even further in our sophomore year, we increased our academic skills and activities. We advanced in athletics. We no longer had to refer to our handbooks to get around. We were at home in our new home. Our steps did not falter as our journey continued. Junior year strengthened the bond we had with our school. We never missed a football or basketball game. We attended all the dances and put on the prom. The Class of ' 83 had never been so busy or so happy. With the end in sight, senior year thrust in its head like a double-edge sword. On one edge we were seniors , the leaders of the school, the deciding vote, the center of attention, and our opponents ' most feared adversary. On the other edge, we had to realize just how soon our reign would end. Major decisions had to be made. Loose ends had to be taken care of; Good-byes had to be said. Our lives would never be the same. We have reached the end of the hallway. A different world is just beyond the door. The question of where we will be a year from now is a scary one. But we have no need to fear the future because we know that although success is our ultimate goal, it isn ' t the only thing that will matter. It would be great to discover other worlds or run a 2-minute mile, but what truly matters is that if we stumble along the way, there will be 434 classmates ready to pick us up, brush us off, and help us start over. With this kind of support, there is no reason why we cannot conquer these tasks and many more. We are proud to call ourselves the Steelmen Class of ' 83. We have been the defenders of our school and have succeeded once again, with the help of our school board. We have become not only strong but intelligent with the assistance of teachers who have cared for us as people not just faces. We have been guided by the fairness and the iron hand of Dean MacLaughlin and the friendship and kindness of Mrs. Conroy. We have been lead by Mrs. Franklin and Mr. Shaw and directed by our counselors. We have had the love and support of our parents and have been very lucky to be molded by these kinds of people. Now, our reign is coming to an end and we must prepare to leave. Our time away from our four-year home will be long, but our hearts will never forget the lady who has taught us that we are all her children, regardless of race, color, or creed, shown us friendship and support, and now gives us her trust. The trust that we will succeed, fight for what is right, and always be ready to catch any of our fellow Steelmen. Now I would like to take this time to wish each and every one of you, all the happiness you can stand and tell you that you are the best high school class I have ever had the honor to graduate with. There are many ways to express Love but none so adequately expressed love as the decorative scene in our gym that consisted of pink, red and white streamers to produce a more romantic and cozy effect. Three trees with heart-shaped leaves added a special touch, as well as cupids and hearts adorning the walls to complete the total Look of Love scene. In addition to the visual expressions of love, Friends Band auditorially and verbally expressed love by musically entertaining everyone for three hours with their beautiful songs of love. Pictures were taken in the midst of a forest of heart trees. Puppy Love Ms. T helrose and Mrs. Knight enjoying themselves. A little friendly get-together. What did vou do this time? AUTOGRAPHS 12 .GOOD LUCK - CLASS OF 1983, The school year has come to an end and so must the yearbook. I hope that in later years, when we have all made a place for ourselves in this world, we will take the time to look back through the many pages of memories and realize that along with all the hard work put into 1983, there were a lot of good times too. Tears have been shed during the ' 83 school year, tears of sadness that the class of ' 83 is the last to see a graduating class from three campuses. I want to wish the best of luck to those who will be leaving Central and making a new start in a new school. And while you are making your way in a new school, remember the saying, which stands true, once a Steelman, always a Steelman! I would like to say Thank you to all those who made this book of memories possible. Thank you: Mary Kula for helping with the division pages which needed immediate attention; Marcella Ceballos and Jill Watts for typing the many pages; Phil Calcateria for his excellent artwork; deans and secretaries for furnishing information; all the faculty and staff for putting up with the yearbook staff while we were disturbing your classes to take pictures; and of course, Mr. George for guiding us through this very busy year. P.S. I am sorry for any misspellings which may not have been corrected and also the omission of some names due to the rushed time.
