.--fi' g,,... S Nl' 5 -f- ' Q, 5 H, ., V X VK Zzaoifznwn Begin 5cfaaal-- 3 8 The cartoon above demonstrates the plight of some eight hundred freshmen who became members of jT's student body on September 8, 1953. As far as classes and schedule go they had little to worry about because freshmen have a basic program consisting of English, social studies, earth science, and physical education. ln addition to these courses the boys take general shop while the girls take homemak- ing. Music was available for those who had the desire and ability to participate. Probably the first big problem if they were not familiar with the building was to discover the location of classrooms, the cafeteria, gymnasiums, etc. More than one freshie made the mistake of asking direc- tions from an unscrupulous upper classman who directed the innocent first-year student to the fourth floor to the gymnasium. But d0n't pity the Class of 1957 for next year will find its members ruthlessly misleading incoming freshmen. Since the freshmen and sophomore classes do not have class officers there were no elections of vital in- terest to freshman students. By and large the problem of getting a good start the first year in classroom work kept them busy. Of course many freshmen took advantage of the wide variety of extra-curricular offerings that JT has which provide the opportunity to share common in- terests with other students. H. R. 199-Tron!
