Miss Grace M. Clow, head of the attendance office. came to .loliet Township High School in 1914. Versatility and adaptahility are shown in her career. She entered as a teacher of English, hut during depression days turned to com' mercial work. later serving as head of that department. She especially enjoyed teaching shorthand. and her proficiency here is attestf ed to hy a former student who avcrrcd. Miss Clow could teach shorthand to a post. Drafted in 1943 to take charge of the at' tendancc office, she forgot personal inclinaf tions and loyally assumed a difficult position. Whilc director of interior attendance, she has reorganized the office into an efficient organf ization. Miss Clow is a graduate of Illinois Univerf sity. Loyola Univcrsity. and Gregg College and .i nienihci' of Delta Gamma and Phi Beta Kap' pa, A pastfprcsident of B. and P. W.. she is also an active worker in A.A.Ll,W. Miss Clow has always lived in Will County. She loves the country. especially thc farm near Plainfield to which her Scottish grcatfgrandf father came in 1344. Rannc, physics instructor, hccanie a memher of the faculty in 1924. Loyalty to high standards has characterized his work, and he has heen a great favorite of students who have a true desire to learn and who take pride in performance. As a most thorough and efficient teacher of college preparatory physics, Mr. Ranne has made a real contrihution to his department. Many alumni who have gone on to successful careers in engineering have returned to pay trihute to the excellence of the preparation in physics given hy him. Mr. Ranne is a graduate of Hanover Col- lege and of the University of Chicago. Before coming to Joliet, he expressed his liking for travel and variety hy teaching in many diff ferent sections of the country. He entered Joliet as an athletic coach. later transferring to the science department. Travelling is Mr. Ranne's great interest. The prettiest sight in the world to him is Lake Louise on a sunny day in June. He has made eight trips to Europeg on some of these oc' casions he has conducted a tour of his own. If conditions permit, Mr. Ranne looks forward to again organizing a tour and refvisiting Euf rope in the summer of 1949.

Converse has heen connected with Joliet Township High School since 1913 when he organized the first orchestra, This first twelvefpiece orchestra has develop- ed into a large organization of sterling per' formance whose rccitals have given much pleasure to the school and community. This group regularly won first in state and regional competitions. A graduate of the American Conservatory of Music. Mr. Converse is himself a fine violin' ist and has composed several selections which have heen performed here and elsewhere. Among them are Cavotte for orchestra and Romance for strings. He has served several times in the Illinois School Orchestra Association as president, vice' president, and secretaryftreasurer, and also as vicefpresident of the National School Orchestra Association. Modest and unassuming, Mr. Converse has a loyal love of finer things which has engender' ed a kindred feeling in members of his organ' ization. His influence will live in the true love of music he has developed in the community and in the lives of hoys and girls whom he has helped to hecome fine men and women. Miss Elizaheth Barns has devoted a lifetime of loyal service to the hest interests of Joliet Township High School. A graduate of the class of 1902, she com- pleted Northwestern University in three years. and then returned to teach in her alma mater in Septemhcr. 1905. A clear thinker with a keen sense of fair play. Miss Barns is an outstanding teacher. Under her alert and tireless leadership, the social science department has made great prog ress. Civicfminded and generous of her time and energy, she has accepted all opportunities to further a worthy cause. The Teachers' Welfairc Committee won noteworthy victories during her ahle chairmanship from 194547. Miss Barns has also served on many committees working for community betterment. Among these have heen the research committee for the Joliet Centennial Celehration, Community Chest drives, and the recent Silver Cross ex- pansion drive. Miss Barns is a memhcr of the South Suhur- han. of the lllinois. and of the National Social Studies Councils. She is a pastfpresident of the B. and P. W. and is presidentfelect of the A.A.U.W. ln this and in many other ways Miss Barns will continue her career of meritorious service. HIRAN A. CONVERSE
