Macpherson pastor of the Universalist Church of Joliet is reverently offered to the boys who have so gallantly gone off to fol- low the flag in the service of our country. A PRAYER ' FOR ALL WHO SERVE God, Ou r Father, guard we pray Thee Those who serve our land and Thee In a world wide fight for freedom In the air, on land, and sea. Keep, we pray, their souls from error And their bodies free from pain, While they overcome the terror Born of insane lust for gain. God, our Father, we are praying For a vision all may see, For the price our men are paying In the course of liberty. Give, we pray, a strength for living That is full of harmony, With what our beloved are giving In the air, on land, and sea. ARMY NAVY QCont.j TRAINING FOR TODAY is very important when it comes to the boys going into the service of their country. Boys from IT have gone into every branch of the armed forces, the army, navy, and the marines, and have brought honor to the school. The serv- ice is built upon training -- training so that they will be equipped, mentally and physically, to overcome their country's enemies. The boys that have left school to go into their country's armed forces to protect and uphold Democracy, should be praised to the limit. These boys, whose names will follow, have left school dur- ing the school year of 1943-1944, and are now scattered from coast to coast to get their TRAINING FOR TODAY. Anyway, the fall season started with a Backwards Party and the initiation of the new members. ln HTRAININC FOR TOMORliOW',ll the girls trained not only in sports, but in respon- sibility and leadership. Under the instruction of Mrs. Beulah Hoffer and Mrs. Phoebe Ann Kirby, over twenty sports were ohfered. Near- ly all were lilled to capacity. A Youth stands high on a hillside steep And looking: out over the horizon he asks: Hlxillill worlds to conquer have l . , , l'urple hazes cover spots here and there, And the dawn's early mists rise ln unending clouds Hiding my vision from what is beyond . . My path is not clear. A voice echoes far front the dint heights above, lts tones are wondrous and clear. lt calls to the lad, saying: Ucilllllll up here . . . XYhere peace and content reign supreme on the throncs, U Here your ltopes will all be fulhllcdl The niessaite appeals to the Youth on the hill, And faltering he turns his face To the place whence this beautiful voice. ir Nutt' front the lingering shadows of night There eonles wandering upward a spirited vision ln silence enveloping plain and slope lt rajoles and impresses and pleads lX'ith the young inan's powers of reason . , Till his thoughts are shadowy . . . too. This message appeals to the Youth on the hill, And falterini: he turns toward the shade Stumbling away front the voiee far above. His now purposeless feet suddenly halt For into oblivion fade those shadows and niists And the hilltop lies bathed ln a glorious clearness. Caverns of the mind are tihned no more By doubt and dark incleeision, He has found Truth in the voiee front above . , And so niust we. Oh, like the lvy that turns to the sun May we learn to look to the heavens . . . And see in the future the glories of life XYhich are ours for the taking. Slay we, like the Youth , . , Find our hilltops bathed in light . The light of the Truth. john Karl Robinson 145 Q JOLIET HERALD-NEWS A number of s+uden+s are receiving irainung for 'romorrow by working for 'rhe Jolie+ Herald- News. We offer our best wishes for your future success We like to print The I BREWSTER PRINTING cos 501 Second Avenue Phone 9297 JOLET, ILLINOIS PRACTISING FOR TOMORROW In the preceding advertisements you have seen many high school boys and girls working in downtown stores and shops. They are there for a dual purpose. Besides helping out the local merchants during the manpower shortage due to the war, they are also training themselves for their future jobs in the postwar world. This kind of training helps them ob- tain a broader outlook on life and teaches them how to deal with people. The latter will be an invaluable aid to them later on in life. The value of money is another important thing learned by clerking after school and dur- ing the summer months. All in all, this is an important block in the foundation which all students are laying for tomorrow. 421490 Ann Miller Doris Miller Dorothy Miller Mary Jane Miller Robert Miller Shirley Miller Winifred Moak Shirley Molnar Mabel Mooney Clare Moore Edwin Morello Aloma Morris Betty Morris Jacqueline Morris Joyce Morris Bob Morrison Beverly Morse Theresa Mrozek Beverly Munson Don Muhlig Don Mull Arlene Murphy Irene Murphy Jean Murphy Emily Nause Jean Nelson S'hirley Nelson Louis Nemeth Russell Nielsen Gordon Noble Leon O'Brien Betty Lou Oetter Melvin Oetter Eunice Offner June Ogden Celia Ohman Kenneth Okolowitz Julietta 0'Large Bliss Olsen Lois Olson Edward Olznoi Steve Orlovich Frank Osborne Fannie Bell Paige Rose Panier Tom Pappas Dorothy Paris Helen Pasich Marjorie Pealstrom Jean Penosky Joe Pereslch Marcella Peters Ruth Peterson Albert Petrella Shirley Petty John Phillips Dolores Adams Robert Agazzi Violet Albert Dale Allen Margaret Allen Beverly Altiery Norbert Ambrose Dorothy Ancel Charlene Anderson Elna Anderson Norma Anderson Ray Anderson Josephine Anzalone Harry Apgar Donald Appell Lois Ariagno Jean Arling Leo Arlow Mary Louise Arnold David Ashby Edgar Ashley Stewart Ayres Jean Babbe Theodore Babicki LeNita Back Camille Bailey CLASS OF 1945 fContinuedj Norman Pieper Richard Pirc Mary Pisut Robert Pluth Shirley Pohl Viola Porfilio John Potocki William Potts Beverly Powell Gladys Priest Lawrence Prouty Mary Prouty Joseph Pruss Henry Przybysz Shirley Pubentz Al Pugh Dorene Quick Helen Ann Quist Robert Radtke Eugene Randolph Arthur Rastello Florence Regaldo Jacqueline Reichman Dolores Reinhardt John Rende Charles Repenn Marie Resetic Joan Rimke Jenne Rizzo - Jayne Robb Mary Louise Robinson Robert Robinson Stanley Robinson Dolores Roder Frederick Roderick Delton Rodgers Frank Rood Jean Roth Eugene Rudd Dolores Rudman Jean Ruechert Donald Russell Margaret Rydberg Robert Rys Louise Salato Jack Santacruz Joe Sari Lloyd Schactner Patsy Scheidt Gloria Scheive Raymond Schluntz Lois Jean Schreiner Joanne Schuck Elda Schuldt Glenn Schultz Ann Shwendermann Annabella Seehafer John Sennlng John Sergeant Virginia Seyffert David Shapiro Norraine Sheffer Lois M.
