E 1011 CLASS HISTORY Four years ago we seniors began our lives at Joliet Catholic High School. We were green then, as green as any freshmen could be. But it wasn't long before we became adiusted and be- came a part of the student body at Catholic High. The year passed fast for some, slowly for others, but by June we were finished with the first year. We had begun the climb toward grad- uation. Behind us, with no regret on our part, was freshman Latin, woodshop, algebra, English, social studies, and general math. In September most of us were back as sopho- mores. We settled down to Latin ll, geometry, metal shop, and Julius Caesar. During that sopho- more year, some of us were making names in sports at the Hill. Fellows like Gil Pluth, Carmen DiGiovine, Carmen Astorino, and Tom Briese were becoming prominent in football. By mid- year Fred Dedin was on his way to become one of Catholic High's great basketball players. When spring rolled around, Terry Fitzgerald, Mike Koer- ner, Bill McCanna, and Tom Briese led the Frosh- Soph Baseball team to a 9-0 season. Frank Mores and Jack Nevin were key men on the varsity golf team in their Sophomore year. They were members of the elite JCHS golf team that won the State Championship. Dale Peters and others ioined the Victory Light staff. They wanted to make the school paper one of the best in the state. The summer went quickly and in the fall we returned to the Hill as iuniors. We had laughs, and fun, troubles and setbacks, moments of glory and days of success, and nine months as iuniors. In the iunior year we had class elections and 36 DiGiovine, Astorino, Funk, and Dedin were elected. We played our share of sports and helped the baseball team to a 16-3 record.- Some of the iuniors were in the Band-Ron Ariagno, Rich Hulina, Darrell Langlois, Ron Francikovich, and Ron Fox assisted the Band to a superior rating at the State Music Contest. Other juniors were in the Chorus. Fellows like Rich Stefanich, Frank Nedlo, and Tom Meyer were singing to its tune. As juniors we held our first prom and titled it June in January. The new term began and we were finally sen- iors. This last year was a year so filled with studying, working, and extracurricular activities that it passed almost too quickly. We will always remember the library periods with Brother William, the endless line of seniors who wanted to see Father Thaddeus in order to get out of physics, the way Father Barry con- ducted, Father Cyril's iokes, Father Mel and his iug slips. We will also remember Co-Captains Fred Dedin and Ed Stonich on the basketball court, Victory Light co-editors Larry Sak and Dale Peters, and the senior prom-our last social whirl under a desert tent, the palm trees, the bearded ushers- Heavenly Oasis. Our lives at the Hill were enriched with learn- ing, knowledge, and understanding of life's pur- pose and aims. We can say good-by to the school, its students, and its teachers. We have completed our four years at the Hill and now we can look back at those years and be proud that we belong to the Joliet Catholic High School Class of 1960. X Y I ,fi if , S . I'-. T? ii-Sr? Joliet Township O O O O-O Joliet Catholic's first victory of the season came in the opener at the expense of Joliet Town- ship, 7-O. Both teams were held scoreless for three quarters of play. Half-way thru the fourth the Hill- toppers took a JT punt and marched to the two. The drive was capped by a 25-yard run by Marty Koerner. Halfback Gil Pluth crashed over for the score, Carmen Astorino's place kick upped the Hill lead to 7-O. With about three minutes left, the 'Toppers defense held Township for the victory. Lockport Game: Joliet Catholic , , O O O 7-7 Lockport Township . 0 O 6 6-12 On the road for the first time the Hillmen lost a tight game to Lockport, l2-7. The first half ended with no score as the Hillmen held the Porters three times inside Catholic's 5-yard stripe. Chris Vancura, Lockport's quarterback, broke loose and galloped around left end to give the Porters a 6-O lead in the third quarter. Catholic came back in the fourth as Gil Pluth blasted over for the score. Astorino's kick put JC ahead, 7-6. Vancura led the Porters to another score and a T2-7 victory. Marmion Game: Mighty Mike McKeon breaks through the Cadets line to open the Halfback Gil Pluth rams through Lockport defense for first down yardage, way for the Pocket Rocket Marty Koerner. Joliet Catholic O 6 O O- 6 Marmion Military . .. . , O 7 l3 6-26 Taking advantage of JC's mistakes, Marmion rolled to a 26-6 victory. Although the Hill dominated most of the first half, the Cadets fought back to a 7-6 margin by halftime. In the second half the 'Toppers gained ill yards in the air, but Marmion out-tallied Catholic in the third with two TD's and another in the final quarter. 70 St. Thomas Game: Gil Pluth cracks Tommy defense in effort to add another TD to the Hilltop score. Joliet Catholic 6 O 14 O 0-14 Assumption 6 ssss,, .s,,,,,,s 7 6 2 6 O12-20 The homecoming spirit and the hope of snapping a losing streak spurred The Hillmen to a 14-8 halftime lead. A fourth quarter rally by the Hillmen fell short and the Dons won on their fourth period touchdown. 171 Champaign Game: Racing through the Champaign line, halfback Pluth rambles for a first down. Joliet Catholic O O 0 O-O Champaign , T3 7 T3 i2-45 From the opening kickoff the Hilltoppers knew this was not their night. Champaign showed why its eleven is noted as a perennial state football power as the Maroons completely overpowered the Hill in a 45-O triumph on their home turf. Joliet Catholic O O O O-O St. Procopius ,,o,,, , O O O OfO Hilltop football fortunes seemed to be dependent partially on the weather and the number of breaks the gridders could muster. At Lisle, neither one of these factors came through. Extremely cold weather and a series of bad breaks stopped Catholic High. The contest ended in a O-O tie. The deepest penetration was made by the Redwings who came within feet of the Hilltop goal only to be stopped by the stubborn White and Brown wall. St. Procopius Game: Halfback Nick Slimack heads for end zone, but is stopped by Proco Schlerman Game: tackle. With an open field Bill Grey races down field for a first down. Carmen DiGiovine added the final tally on an inter- cepted pass deep in enemy territory. The Religion department, under the direction of Fr. Casimir Zielinski, O. Carm., conducts a varied pro- gram. With special emphasis on devotion to Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, the program includes daily Mass and Confession, monthly bulletins, and mission col- lections, retreats and days of recollection. In close cooperation with the counseling program, the entire faculty assists in giving Hillmen a firm basis for living their faith in the future. A new feature of the religion program was the celebration of the Church Unity Octave in January at St. Mary's Carmelite Church. The Religion department cooperated with the Carmelites at St. Mary's to present Mass in various rites: Roman, Carmelite, and Byzantine. The octave consisted not only of Mass but special in- structions in the sacraments and liturgy.
