It was a lofty fall from leaders of the school in eighth grade, to a group of timid individuals that we represented when we first came to the Hill. The first two months were the roughest, trying.to get adiusted to the way that things were managed here. The upperclassmen didn't aid matters much with their elevator key sales and not-so-helpful advice. Father Lucian proved himself a true friend to all freshmen with his understanding and congenial per- sonality. Freshmen with iournalistic talents got a chance to blow off steam by writing articles for the SPARK, the first newspaper ever put out by a fresh- man class. So well remembered are the iugs we re- ceived from the priests who didn't appreciate our not- so-playful antics. As sophomores, we were a year older, but still underclassmen. Fellows like McGraw, Gassensmith, and Carnaghi were making names for themselves on the football field. With Father Shane as the new Principal and Father Colman as Dean of Students, the increased enrollment was very capably handled. lt took a few months to get accustomed to the new wings and classrooms, but by November everyone was in the swing of things. Basketball season started and Rickelman, Dedin, McGraw, Gassensmith, and Klett were in there fighting for rebounds and leading the frosh-soph team to a 16 and 4 record. Many of the sophomores managed to get on the honor roll, though translating Caesar made it quite a challenge. Much delight was taken in dissect- ing the worms and frogs in the biology laboratory much to the satisfaction of Doctor Curran. Before we realized it final exams had come and gone. We re- ceived our report cards and another summer set in. Junior year brought quite a change. Father Nor- man's quick wit brought chuckles from all iuniors.in world history classes. Father Rowan's Boston accent was unique to be sure. The basketball, football, and baseball teams were well represented by this class. The tennis was or- ganized by Father Matthias with Fred Donnelly as its key player. Track was also begun under the direction of Father Carey, the iunior religion teacher. Speech was put into the curriculum, ably taught by Father Berthold. Then late in April the Junior Speech Contest was held in the school gym. Tom Drolet copped honors with his timely talk on the need for scientists. The iuniors looked upon the oncoming summer with happy thoughts as our junior year fairly flew by. The summer didn't last long. The old school bell was ringing on September 4, calling us back to the books. We were seniors now, the long awaited day had finally arrived. We were the so-called big shots of the school. We can still picture the bewildered freshmen running about the halls, representing our exact likeness three years previous. The football team was highly successful, ending the year with a 5 and 3 record. McGraw led the area in scoring. The football dance, given in honor of the team, was very well attended by the student body. Basketball season started soon afterward with six senior lettermen returning to add depth and experience to the squad. Their sportsmanship and tremendous playing ability will be remembered by everyone who saw them play. With graduation close at hand many seniors began thinking of the college they would attend. Aided by the results of the Kuder Preference Tests, they were enabled to discover what field they were best suited for. Hours were spent in graduation practice and then the big moment came. We received our diplomas and were now alumni of Catholic High. Though we may never again walk the halls of Cath- olic High, it is our earnest desire to be remembered as a class which did its best to uphold the dignity that this school represents.
