Each of its many activities has been a credit to the school. The performance of our band at the annual concert was widely ac- claimed. At the state music contest our band members provedthemselves to be musicians second to none in the Joliet area. L toR Fr Colman R Winans and Mr Burdeau L, to R.: G, lNl3lll'105kl,J. Much creditis due to Father Colman Walsh, the moderator for the last four years, and to the faithful Band Parents' Association, who through a magnitude of tedious work, have procured new uniforms for our organization. These uniforms have most certainly added to the band's prestige in extra-mural functions. The band has performed very creditably at: all foot- ball and basketball games, Lewis College, Plainfield High, and J. C. Homecomingg Labor Day, Veterans' Day, Memorial Day, and Independence Day paradesg the J. T. football gameg College of St. Francis and Catholic High graduationsg and, of course, the annual spring concert. With the annual increase in personel, the band is destined to become one of the area's outstanding bands. llli 'iw mi OCTET Kane- M' De Welch- Rt. Y A ry. 3-, Bmck- w H U. G -fwussa - Oremc. Besides providing the stu- dents with a listening post, The Victory Light is an outlet for rested in journalism. THE TUDENT COUNCH, For the lastthree years, the Student Council has functioned as the integrating organization of the school. This past year was no exception. The elections were held on November 5th, a few days after the convention. Competing this year for the presidency were nominees: Gerald Maier, Dennis Drolet, and James Kavanaugh. Drolet's Activite ticket won. Throughout the year, the Student Council rem-ained the main cog in the school's machine , conducting many stu- dent activities: Christmas Raffle, Frosh-Soph Hop, St. Patrick's Day Dance, Yearbook collections, Going Steady Forum, and many minor activi- ties. Bishop McNamara, assisted by Father Lucian, presided at the ceremony held before the entire student body in the gymnasium. Special guests were Mr. Hayes Kennedy, a local attorney, and Mr. Clothier, registrar of Lewis Col- lege, and the parents of the honor stu- dents. Each candidate received a membership card and an engraved scroll of achievement attesting to his scholarship, leadership, service, and character. A plaque of permanent membership in the NHS was present- ed to Bishop McNamara. Father Lucian was also presented a charter for the new addition to the school. One important project undertaken by the NHS was the management of the activities of Step-up Day. On this day the NHS played host to the eighth graders who came to the Hill to regis- ter and get a preview of high school life. JUNIOR RED CROSS The Junior Red Cross Chapter of Joliet Catholic HighSchool, Mike Delaney, President and Father Casimir, moderator, ac- tively participated in the RedCross HighSchool pro- gram during the past year. Training for Civil De- fense and packaging gift boxes for underpriviliged children were but two of the many activities spon- sored by the Junior Red Cross. 5,6462 I VARSITY FOOTBALL JCI-IS 0 St. Ambrose 13 In the first game of the season an eleven game winning streak was ended for Catholic High when St. Ambrose of Davenport, Iowa, met Joliet Catholic High at Joliet. A speedy St. Ambrose backfield was too much for the Hillmen. In his first year as head football coach at Joliet C atholic High School, Coach Ernie Zeleski, former Notre Dame and profes- sional football star, and his capable assistant, Gor- don Gillespie, guided the Hilltopperstoao-3 record. Led by Ken Could and Jim Kavanaugh, co-cap- tains, the Hilltop varsity won, for the second straight year, the mythical City Championship by beating Joliet Township 6-O, and Lockport 13-7. 5 . fl! s ffl U69 ' 7y W 4 '- f i , x - J ff' V 1 0 JCI-IS Z4 Marmion 6 Scoring in every quarter but the first, the I-Iilltoppers march- ed on to their second straight victory when theybeat Marrnion Military 24-6. Marrr1ion's lone score was in the fourth period. Rugged line play and the scoring of Lou Faoro, Ken Could, Tom Marchio and Dick Gans proved too much for the Cadets from Aurora. JCI-IS 7 Champaign 14 An interception and along touchdown pass by Champaign meant the downfall of the Hill- men when they traveled to Champaign, Illinois. The down- staters stopped Joliet Catholic 14-7 in a closely fought game. Ken Gould's touchdown and Roger Green's conversion re- sulted in Catholic High's only score. Ken Tucci leads Ben Birsa on runback, III JCHS Sherdan 6 A Matt Laurich pitchout to Lou Faoro, who heaved a 14 yard pass to Ed Matesavec gave the Hill its score. Roger Green split the up- rights to give the Hillmen the de- ciding factor in the scoring column. JCHS St. Joseph 8 Scoring a touchdown and a safety in the first quarter was enough for St. Joe's of South Bend to squeak out an 8-7 Win. Ken Gou1d's TD and Roger Grecn's conversion were the I-Ii1l's scores. Lel's see that eye 1 sk' i lgx , 2 ,Ubi -'12+Y-Q. Lou Faoro and junior Al Mondrella each scored once to give the Hill a 33-O victory. Roger Green came through with three conver- sions. 86 JCI-IS 26 Schlarman 0 Fourteen seniors, playing their last football game for the Hill, along with eighteen of their understudies, trampled over Schlarman High School of Danville, Ill. 26-0 in the final game of the gridiron season. Jim Kavanaugh, Bob Mandel, Lou Faoro and Tom Marchio did the scoring for the Joliet eleven with Roger Green adding two conversions. 15 1955 VARSIT FIRST ROW, 1. to r.: Coach E. Zalejski, P.
