Glee Club made two public appearances. They took part in the Diocesan Music Festival and were present for the Band Concert. Many a night was spent in rehearsal when singing didn't seem to be easy. But this is the first year that the Glee Club has been given a place in the school schedule. Most of the other clubs had to have their meetings after school hours. The Glee Club officers for the past year were: Michael Delaney, Pres.g Ed Stefanich, V-Pg Pat McMaster, Sec. and Treas. The Glee Club wound up the year by having a party for all its members, and taking part in the program honoring the mothers at a special ceremony during the month of May. -i Seated Mr Joseph Henneberry Treas Mr Rudolph Smego Pres Mrs JosephV1det1ch V P Mrs Joseph Mussarro Sec Mrs Carl Wln ans Back Row Mrs Joseph Henneberry Publrc1tyCha1rman Mr Ar mand Iacono Band Dxrector Fr Colman Moderator Mrs Robert Clrnk Telephone Charrman 51 Fr Luclan and some Band Parents A monthly meetmg ...BAK 66 BAND PARENTS ASSOCIATIO When we proudly wrtness the actrvttres of our Joltet Cathollc High Band we lrttle realrze the work that goes into the prepara tron and servtng of a spaghettr drnner or the work of holdrng a rummage sale But tt rs not for recogmtron or prarse that the Band Assocratron undertakes these proJects It IS upkeep of the band and to grve thelr sons an opportunrty for a musrcal educatron that the parents are ready for any task asked of them Thrs year Father Colman Band Modera tor Mr Iacono Band Dtrector and Mr Rudolph Smego Presldent are to be con gratulatedona very successful year Almost monthly projects rncluded two spaghettr drnners two rummage sales a bakery sale the band concert varrous raffles the band Chrrstmas party and a mtnstrel Cp l07j This year through the hard work of the Band Parents new unrforms are berng pur chased to outfrt the whole band Q 'x fry - 4- ' fi to provide the financial help needed for the 2 X xr ff!! en Behind the scenes of the spaghetti dinner ? MCTHERS' CLUB Under the leader ship of Father Lucian, the moderator, and Mrs. Joseph Stalzer, President, monthly meetings were held and the mothers met socially, heard educational talks by members of the school faculty, enjoyed the special programs and planned their various activities. This year two suc ce s sful card parties, Fall and Pre-Lenten, were held. A Ham Dinner in April, two Hat Sales, Spring and Fall, were sponsor- ed. The climax ofthe year was the an- nual Mother's Day Program, consist- ing of a Solemn High Mass, asermon, breakfast, and entertainment provided by the students. To our Mothers go our thanks again. Wherever the need arose, no matter how laborious or difficult the task, our mothers were there, working loyally and harmoniously for the good of the school, for the good of us, the students, their sons. Put on your Easter Bonnet ALTAR BOYS CLUB Shortly after the school year opened, the Servers club was organized by Father Damian, Moderator. Paul Schweizer was elected President. During the year the altar boys served the weekly student masses, served the days of retreat and climaxed with the Solemn High Mass on Mothers' Day. N 2 1 0 Q-avg UQ! THE HILLTOPPER STAFF We, the staff of 1954, present the Hilltopper to you,the students of Joliet Catholic High. Many hours were spent in hard work to make this the finest edition in JCHS' history. At these ceremonies Father Lucian, the Principal, and Fr. Shane, Moderator, congratulated the students on attaining the eighty-five percent average required for membership in this honor society. Each candidate received a me mbe r ship card and a beautifully engraved scroll of achievement, attesting to his leadership in the important area of studies. The senior members ofthe NHS carefully planned three projects the past year. They handled the many details of the Homecoming Parade, inviting the grammar schools of the city to enter floats in competition for the first time in the history of the school. The result desired was achieved: one of the largest and nosiest parades in many a year. According to precedent the NHS organized the com- plicated machinery of the Student Council elections and staged the mammouth convention before the final voting. Their last venture, again a traditional one for the NHS at Joliet Catholic, was Step-up Day, when they were hosts to a deluge of eighth graders from Joliet and vicinity who came to the Hill for registration and introduction into the secrets of high school life. However, writing the articles is but half the story of how the paper came to reach the hands of the average JCHS-ers. Once the copy had been written, it had to be edited, typed into columns, placed on stencils, printed, and stapled together , forming the finish- ed product. THE VICTORY LIGHT ..Ed.. Wnrsn rlfujp A Tom Birsa, Fr. Shane, Moderator, Frank Lo Cascio and Jim Coyne change the script. The Senior Memiographers The 1953-1954 version of Joliet Cath- olic's Student Council wove what we hope will be the beginning of a pattern for future Councils in the school. They carried on the tradition of the school- wide elections in the early part of the year, replete with the three-party sys- tem, the week-long campaign by the three parties, the rip-roaring conven- tion the day before the final voting, and the secret balloting by students and faculty. Tom Birsa and his Councilite Party swept the elections for three of the four offices. Bob Wright was elected Vice- President, Paul Schweizer Treasurer, while Rich Stalzer , the Secretary, was the only member of the Studentium party to be elected. Convention Chairman Joe Orenic. Forty-six students comprise the mem- bership in the Student Council,a good sampling from all the classes. Sunday evening meetings had good attendance. At these meetings most effort concen- trated on standardizing the work of the Council for future years. The main committee work was the writing of the Constitution. Committee chairman, George Beerling, and members Jack Markley, George Klepec, and Ray Orenic presented the Constitution to the Council April 25th and it was passed with little revision. The work of President Tom Birsa and the Council this year was a definite step inthe right direction. Future Councils, however ,have a great deal ofwork ahead of them before the Student Council will find its true place in the educational scheme of Joliet Catholic High School. Speaker's platform. Rene Hayes, O. Carm. Retreat is an old and treasured tradition of Joliet Catholic, as it is in every high schooL It is during this time that many of the spiritual problems that weigh on our minds are erased, while a feeling of spiritual rejuvenation fills our beings. Our retreat commenced each morning with Mass and Holy Communion, and the rest of the day was spent in silent spiritual reading, general and special conferences. In the afternoon, we recited the rosary and assisted at Benediction. On the last day of retreat, we received the Papal Blessing. Retreat is something we always associate in our wonderful recollections of high school days. fk gr' - .. ,A ..-..-..-..-..x..s..x..s.N..-..-..,..,..,..NH-..-.,-Hx..-..,..,..,..-..,..-.. 1 I 1 1, I ll11I111UP VHHNUH FUIHEWHE 111 11 1 1 ' vm.,-fed n, 1. 1, 11 5. 1111111 1111111115 1195111111111 1 1 1 1 1 1-tl-1 Q X 41 f 1 o A :sv NWALSH Ba emo' IU 5 I J C 1-1 5 GYMNASIUM l 1 1 1 l .1311 ff' on ' f f 5' 4 f Av O lj: was-aw --C A s T-- H 4 Ask? This ushered in Career Day at Catholic High. After the talk the Juniors and Seniors went to individual classrooms in which one phase of practically every aspect of professional, vocational, and business life was reviewed by an authority in that field. The talks proved interesting and informative to those who in a few weeks would be seriously concerned about selecting their life's work.
