Old Saint Pat- rick's Church was founded on the hill where I CHS now stands, making it the oldest piece of church pmpert in con- tinuous use in the Midwest. lh' 1818 a towering belfry was erected and a torch in the structure li hted the way fordwel- lers in loliet. ihe present tower and Victory Light carry on this century - old tradition. During our years at Joliet Catholic we are taught to look to the Victory Light for inspiration - not only as a beacon announcing the success of our athletic endeavors, but also as a symbol illuminating the best in life. Fach dance seemed to outdo the previous one in beauty of decorations. let there was al wavs present a note of sadness, since the results of all the hours of cheerful toll and pleasant trouble were onlv to be torn down in the morning. Without the much welcomed aid of the girls of Providence High School and qt Francis flcaderrw, many of the dances, especially the l oot ball Homecoming and the qenior Prom, would have been short of decorations, somehow they can draw plavers and cut leaves better than anv boy at the ll1ll. Qocials also plaved an important part in the entertainment calendar during the vear for the students as well as for many other youths of the city. Outstanding among the informal dances were the outdoor dance held on llicl-gory Street after the Homecoming pep rally, the social after lfather llay,s reception, and the gala St. ljatrick's Day Danceq some of the orchestras that fumished music for these affairs were Don Cordano's, Gene Yictor's, Roy Cordon's, and Billy ldester'sg another provider was the ever-faighful jukebox. Unce the copy had been written, it had to be edited, typed into columns, placed on stencils, printed, and stapled together, fomxing the finished product. Much of the staff's time passed in the little room off the office, but all the paper boys truly enjoyed each minute of it. 115 Je 7s7f6Z6'Zo,6,6efz llesultin from many evenings spent in the school library by a group of aspiring young writers accompanied by Father Shane, the Hllilltopper l952,H Yolume IV, emerged, one hundred and twenty-four pages of pic- tures and copy. Nothing too new or startling was intro- duced into this boolcg instead, each member voiced his own opinions and ideas, causing the final product tobe a conglomeration of compromises. The prospects for future numbers of the llilltoppers are very good, for a promising group of Juniors and Sopho- mores spent most of the year acquainting themselves with the technical phases of editing and production.
