FOREWORD Taken One Step At A Time. One Step Is Not Too Much To Take, One Try Is Not Too Much To Make. One Step, One Try, One Song, One Smile, Will Shortly Stretch Into A Mile. And Everything Worth 'While Was T5one By Small Steps Taken One By One. To Reach The Goal You Started For, Take One Step More—-Take One Step Morel J. D. Freeman We, the seniors of 1958 dedicate this, the ninth edition of the JO-HI-SK- AN, to our close friend, helper, and for- mer taachei Mrs. Arlene Ballandby Stensrud. This we do In the hope that in some humble way we may say thank you for the time spent, the patient helpfulness, and the companionship, which have been ours. To one of us she is a sister, to an- other an advisor, to still another an an- swer to our many needs. To all of us she is, and will remain, in our hearts and minds, our faithful confidant and inter- ested friend. Respectfully we submit this wish: that the senior class of 195® may remain forever in her memory and that there will always be a warm spot in her heart for the 1958 senior class. CLASS MOTTO The road of toil leads to the city called success CLASS COLORS Crimson and Gray CLASS FLOWER Red Carnation Co-operation would solve most of our problems. Sven freckles would be a nice coat of tan if they would ever get together. God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference. Time works wonders. So would most people, if they worked 2I4 hours a day as Time. Love, friendship and smiles are like currency. If they are hoarded, no one gets the benefit of them; if they are kept in constant circulation, everyone bene- fits, and again, like money they always accumulate something in the transit. I am not afraid of tomorrow because I have known yesterday and I love today. poem HELTNES GROCERY LAKE MILLS, IOWA T'was the fall of '57 In the little school of Joice; The Senior class consisted, Of three girls and seven boys. Let’s start with Sandra Petersburg, Who was always on the go; With school work and activities. Much interest she did show Gary Brue so tall and fair, Was quite a handsome chap; Each Thursday he’d come early. To study the weekly map. When it came to singing, Eva Olson was first choice; She sang a lot of solos. With her soprano voice. James Ostrao like to study, He rode the bus each day; When the teachers called on him. He’d answer right away. Arlyn Tenold was fond of ball. He enjoyed to practice to; When it came to making points. He always scored quite a few. In Mr. Ennen’s office, Larry Dietrich was sure to be; Not because of discipline He worked up there, you see. Taking pictures for the annual. Was Vincent Fibelstad's Job; He snapped his victims one by one Catching every grin and sob. Jerry Clark was happy. When to Boys' State he could go; His Junior year was made complete. Much interest he did show. As a member of the Cheerleaders, Beverly Elwood worked so hard Playing on the basketball team. She was a faithful guard. Richard Ballandby liked sports too, With basketball best of all; He also played on the baseball team. In the spring and in the fall. This concludes the Senior Class Graduation time draws near; May lifes future well be spent. Because of school days here. Mrs. THIS PAGE SPONSORED BYr GORDON JOICE, Robert Stensrud INSURANCE AGENCY IOWA PROPHECY It is now the year 1978. I am taking a little cruise around the earth through space in ray 1978 satellite. As I step out for Just a breath of fresh air I notice my neighboring satellite for the first time. The person lounging around on the upper- most deck looks vaguely familiar; so I maneuver my satellite closer for a look. As I draw nearer I realize that it is Gary Brue my old friend and classmate from way back in 1958. Gary tells me that his satellite is not his permanent residence, he has a lovely house in Palm Beach and one in Oregon which is closer to his work. Gary manu- factures satellites, and he is trying out his new model which is why I happened to meet him here. He says he likes to get away from the hustle and bustle of earth life once in a while. When my daily message from earth arrives, I see a familiar name in the news. It is that of Vincent Fibelstad, another former classmate. A year ago he was appointed ambassador to Russia. In that time he has brought the two countries together happily and now they don't make a move without consulting each other. To make the tie even greater, Vince has married one of the women officials in Russia, and they are in the process of making him Secretary General of the United Nations. On my return trip as I drew nearer to the earth my eyes caught a glimpse of the sign on one of the taller buildings in New York. I went for a closer look and found that it said Evavs Gay 90 Shop”. I wondered if it could be the same Eva I once knen I landed my satellite on the building, got out, and knocked on the door of the manag- er’s office. Who should answer my knock but Eva Olson. Upon visiting with her I found that she is unmarried, still looking, but happy. When talking of our past I recalled how Eva associated everything with the Gay 90's. I found that she left Joice after graduation and opened her own shop which handles everything that deals with the Gay Nineties Period. Her business was booming, and to her money was no object; so we went on a tour of New York City and in the evening we attended a rodeo In Madison Square Garden. Eva was Just like she was in high school, flirting with all the cowboys. Yes, he does look familiar. Of course it is. There, standing in the middle of the arena was our old classmate, Arlyn Tenold. He started at the bottom and worked himself up until he owned the Greatest Rodeo on Earth. He now acts as ringmaster but does his trick riding and special acts when called upon. He is still unmarried as he never could find a girl to suit him. While talking to Arlyn after the show we found that another of our classmates, Jerry Clark, had also gone into the entertainment field. His ability to handle a car, especially on the curves, had gained for him the title of World's Champion Automobile Race Driver. I wonder if the practice he had driving in his high school days helped him win this title. I dropped Eva off at her shop and decided to take a trip back to Joice. I found Fertile and Lake Mills hadn't changed, but In the spot where Joice used to be was a big city. I settled down in the eighty-acre park and walked down one of the streets. I saw a sign on one of the buildings-James Ostmo, Mayor. It was the same James Ostmo I had gone to school with at Joice. He had started on a farm near Joice, bought all of the surrounding farms and now owns half of Joice. He was elected mayor and in tnis capacity brought new industry to Joice. This brought more people and it set off a chain reaction until Joice is now several times larger than when I last saw it. James has married and has children of his own in school now. I asked James if he knew what had happened to the rest of our class of 1958. He told me that Richard Ballandby was a well-known cartoonist. He had gone to New York to begin, but when he heard of the expansion of Joice, he returned to set up his drawing-board in his home town. He said he never did want to leave it. He also is married. I believe James told me she was from Northwood, and they have two little boys -- budding artists, I'm sure. James said that Beverly Elwood had married and she and her husband now headed the Mayo Clinic. She started as a student nurse, worked herself up to head nurse in three years, and finally married the chief surgeon. They were so greatly admired that they were made managers of the entire clinic. They are working in research and have developed a cure for heart disease, the common cold, and are working on TB. when I heard this I remembered Beverly's brilliant mind in Chemistry and Physics in her high school years. I was told that Larry Dietrich was in South America, acting as chief consultant engineer for a large construction company. He entered the Armed Forces shortly after high school and became a Colonel. The President urged him to stay in the Army but he felt that his real calling was the engineering field. Larry has since traveled from one end of the globe to the other designing machinery and equipment for ten different companies. He has never married but he is one of these fellows who has a girl-friend in every port. James informed me that the brain of the class, Sandra Petersburg, had prospered beyond all expectations. She had worked until she had gotten her CPS degree served as THIS PAGE SPONSORED BY: ANDERSON FUNERAL HOME MANLY STATE BANK LAKE MILLS, IOWA MANLY, IOWA ♦PROPHECY CONTINUED the secretary to the President of the United States until she became married to a Duke She now has a family of four, all in school, and is considering a call from the United Nations to be one of their top secretaries. She realizes, she would have to travel a great deal and doesn't like the idea of leaving her family. But for the honor to help and serve she might consider it. As I remember from our high school days she she came through with quite a few honors, but they never really went to her head. I'm sure if she takes the position she would fill it to the best of her ability. I Jumped in satellite and returned to space, happy to know that the class of 1958 had turned out to be so successful. The first was the appearance of Adam and Eve. The second was the birth of Christ. The third was the death of Julius Caesar. The fourth was the crossing of the Atlantic by Columbus. The fifth was the launching of Sputnick. And the sixth was the entrance of the Class of 1958 into the Joice High School. In the last week in August,195U fifteen green freshmen came through the doora of Joice High School to begin their high school year. The members of the new class elected their officers. They were president-Arlyn Tenold, vice-president-Larry Van Hooser, treasurer-Jerry Clark, secretary-Eva Olson, reporter-Sandra Petersburg, claaa advisor was Mr. Kephart. The sophomores soon initiated us and it was a rough day, as we boys had to wear diapers and dress like babies, while the girls dressed like tramps. Later we gained another student, Larry Dietrich, who came from Hampton. When we started our sophomore year we had lost three members of our class. They were David Huso, Kennis Rogness, and Lydia Radichael. In March we lost still another member of the class, Russell Smidt. The officers we elected were: president-Richard Eallandby, vice-president-Gary Erue, tredsurer-Arlyn Tenold, secretary-Vincent Fibel- stad, reporter-Beverly Elwood, our advisor was Mrs. Slattum. We remembered how the sophomores initiated us when we were freshmen; so we made up our mind that we would treat the freshmen in a similiar manner. It proved to be a great day for the sophomores,as the freshmen became full fledged members of Joice High School. We started our Junior year missing one member - Paul Henderson who went to Lake Mills. The year was full of events, the first was the election of class officers, who were: president-Sandra Petersburg, vice-president-Jerry Clark, secretary - Beverly El- wood, treasurer-Gary Brue, reporter-James Ostmo, class advisor was Mrs. finmons. A big event our Junior year was the arrival of our class rings. Another important event was the Junior-Senior Banquet which was held Friday evening, April 26, 1957, in the Hotel Albert at Albert Lea, Minnesota. The theme for the banquet was Moonlight and Roses . The last event was the class play Date Bait which was directed by Mrs. Slattum. We elected our class officers which were president-Jerry Clark, vlce-presldent-Gary Brue, secretary- Sandra Petersburg, treasurer-R1chard Ballandby, reporter-Beverly Elwood. On October 11 we took off from school to take our graduation pictures. We have no excuse for the way they turned out. The last play which any of the seniors had the opportunity to be In was ox senior class play which was given In March. We were happy for the large crowd that attended. They grew in sportsmanship, personality and character. They developed what could be termed as sense of restraint, team spirit, and respect for a leader. This we may proudly say of them in spite of a 3 win and 17 loss record. It might be said that throughout this season there was never a certain select group of six girls that anyone could point out as being the first six players. There were many changes made. The players and their usual positions beginning with the first eight went like this: uorotnv Schott-post forward, Rosemary Sherwood-forward. Eva Olson-forward, Kay Johnson-forward, Beverly Elwood-guard, Sandra Larson-guard Diane Brones-guard, Karen Dahlby-guard, Ardythe Purness-guard, Sharon Charlson-guard, forward, Betty Erickson-forward, Dolores Clark-guard, Sandra Almelien-guard.
