A teacher's contribution to the good of a school depends, in a considerable measure upon the organization in which he works. It is upon this assumption that your Board of Education is trying to carry out its duties and assume its reponsibilities. The Board is interested in obtaining a principal and teachers of high Christian character and scholastic attainments. We have tried in good faith to provide our school with such teachers. The school and patron body are proud to support them, Our annual budget for maintenance is always a hard problem to face. There have been many times when we have been humanly against the wall but the Lord showed us a way out, The Board is deeply concerned for the development of the school system in terms of the achievements of pupils, teachers and principal. The Board is doing all it can at present to provide additional classrooms. By recommendation from the Board and Patron Body approval, construction began this past summer., When the present structure is completed there will be three class- rooms with some auxiliary rooms. A gymnasium-auditorium section is planned to be constructed as soon as funds are available. In providing school equipment, pupil supplies and teachers' helps, the Board is trying to do its best. We know that without the guidance of the Holy Spirit our work as a Board, teachers and patrons would be futile. The Lord's blessings be on all concerned at Johnstown Mennonite School. - Harold E. These are the words that I wrote for the first principal's message in our first Mem -O-Re, eight years ago: The school was then two years old, and the message continued, We are yet in the pioneering stage of our school and what lies ahead we do not know. If, however, the future continues to open to us blessings as have the past two years, then our endeavor will surely be worthwhile. The past two years have proved to be delightfully refreshing to us. The zeal, determination and faith of our patrons sponsoring this work, the help of the church in general, the eagerness and good will of the ministerial body of the Mennonite Churches of the Johnstown District, the encouragement of our conference leaders and the splendid attitude of our local township officials and the county superintendents all helped to make this, I say again, one of the most refresh- ing experiences of my life. I am happy to say that after these ten years, the same spirit still prevails, the work has been worthwhile and, indeed, the experience con- tinues to be delightfully refreshing. Since the next paragraph of that first message so clearly states our continuing aims and purposes, we reprint that also for emphasis. Our school was started to provide for our youth a better knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ. In this hope we will not be disappointed. It is our desire to have everyone who attends to catch the spirit of Christian witness and live a life that will be a blessing to the church and world at large. We will not be without problems. Our aims will not be realized at any time, because we are all far short of perfection. It is the aim of each teacher, however, to train youth in accordance with the standards of the Bible as interpreted by our church, and to teach the elements of a happy life in harmony with a full Gospel. ' We are now in a period of expansion. We long to see the day when the entire building will be completed with ample facilities to do a more efficient job. We know that if we do not lose the vision that brought this school into being, we can also bring this phase of our program to a happy realization. May you, the tenth anniversary graduates, though small in number, prove to be an unusual advertisement to the cause of Christian Schools. 5 3 -rf' 8 sf if .223 ,. is M, ,l it J, l eniorri Bob Thomas - Bob is our big hearted, kind, fun-loving Mem-O-Re Editor Religious Life Comm. 3g Mixed Chorus 2,3,43 Men's Chorus 23 Class Vice President 13 Class President 3,43 Woodworking Club lg Ass't Editor of Mem-o-re 33 Editor of Mem-o-re 43 Neo-Discarian Literary l,2,33 Fidelian Literary 43 Social Comm. 4. Religious Life Committee For Christian students, Chapel is a period of refreshment, edification and encouragement., It is also a period which strengthens our spiritual lives and helps us be more like the Master. Our daily Chapel messages are brought to us by Bro, Shetler and Bro. Bauer with the exception of Fridays. On Friday the Religious Life Committee plans a special program to be presented by the students or a special speaker. We as students appreciate the provision which has been made in our full schedule when we can quietly meditate and listen to the teaching of God's Word. During the school term they made numerous appearances in school functions and in churches of the Johnstown area, both of our denomination and others. They also sang over our local radio station in connection with our regular local program. During the month of June, 1953, they cllmaxed the year with a tour covering sixteen states, representing not only our own school but the cause of Christian educa- tion. Accompanied by the principal and his wife, the Gospel I-Iarmonalres thus extended the work of our school beyond the borders in a way that may not soon be duplicated. From the testimonies received, the tour proved to be a blessing to the group as well as to the churches. 23 mmol Ckorud 'W rw ri.. i The J.M.S. Mixed Chorus of 1953-54 consists of 33 members, wit all the high school represented except two, and also a teacher. Our director is Bro. Shetler whom we thank for so patiently helping us as we rehearsed each time. The purpose of this is to praise and glorify God by using the gifts He gave to us. We want to mean what we sing and not just sing notes. We have tried to choose the songs which will inspire and touch men's hearts and bring them to Christ. Our music consists of: the heavier types of music, Negro spirituals, evangelical and Gospel song variety. The chorus took a tour in the early spring h Weiser Music Center 410 Main St. Johnstovmj Pa. 24 al FN .-1, vi, V . DC 1 7','f x, , K Q1 P1 Q0 ! The Neo-Discarian Literary We Neo-Discarians strive for greater aims and goals in this year., Our interesting meetings are held every other week with everyone ready ana willing to participate. Our program committees have been giving us some very fine programs and have done their best. Our literary has given us opportunities to increase our knowledge and gain more experience in public speaking., Our motto: Not for school but for life we learn. We all do our part to make our activities success- ful. At our regular meeting, every two weeks, we have a program that promotes us in public speaking, is educational and inspirational. Miss Kauffman and Bro. Shetler, our advisors, are always willing to lend a helping hand. We love our literary and all promise to be faithful and true Fidelians. 29 Left to right: Miss Kolb, Miss Yoder, Erma Lehman, Lois Spory, Mary Harshberger, Robert Thomas, Sanford Alwine. This year the Social Committee consisted of five members and two advisors. The officers are as follows: President - Sanford Alwine Secretary -Erma Lehman Treasurer - Mary Harshberger The other members are Lois Spory and Robert Thomas. Miss Kolb and Miss Yoder are our able advisors. During the year we had a number of very enjoyable socials. We'11 not soon forget our fall social at Lohr's Grove, closing with a prayer circle on the banks of the pond. The social at Salix, followed by the girls' slumber party will long be remembered because of the surprise snowfall. Wasn't it fun get- ting home next morning! Another rich memory is that of the Thanksgiving social held in the school basement. We will carry many happy memories of this school year with us, thanks to the work of the social committee. llw-k G f4iMt.z Cammcttee Sports fill a big place at J.M.Sn for we want to develop healthy bodies as well as br-illiant minds. Before and after school the ping-pong table and basketball court are busy in winter. Spring and fall find outdoor ball games in full swing. In order to keep all these things going we need a committee in charge of equipment and grounds. This year's committee was Harold Alwine, Sanford Alwine, Marlin Shetler, Lois She Miriam Mishler and Reta Shetler with Bro. Bauer and Miss Yoder as advisers. A football tournament in the fall and a ping-pong tournament during the winter helped to work up interest and enthusiasm in our sports program this year. tler Bruno Store Phone 9571 Holsopple, Pa. 31 FOOTBALL -M , ,, Y ,., - . if W, Y U E. ,... .v .
