I am happy with you. We have tried hard to let each of you drink at the fountain of knowledge by orienting you with as many different fields of learning as are possible with the limitations of our par- ticular school. We have tried to show you that to all wisdom and knowledge there is a center, which is Christ. In Him are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. We do not apologize for trying to make the spiritual challenge the highest of all, with due respect, of course. for other life appeals. Finally, we expect to be rewarded for our labors in what you do and in what you eventually accomplish. I hope it may not be selfishness if I say that we are expecting, through you, to extend our own influence and service. If you do well, we teachers shall have done well. Do not disappoint us! To you the graduating class of 1951, God's richest blessings. Com mitieo INCE 1.M.S. was founded with the idea of supplying a Christian education for youth of the Mennonite Church, naturally the uppermost concern at this school is the spiritual life of its students. Therefore, it is quite necessary that the committee responsible for religious activities be the best committee of the school with only those students of high ideals serving as members. Not only is this committee, which is headed by a faculty member, responsible for each devotional period at the beginning of every day, but also for all other religious activities of the school. For the daily devotional period much thought is given by the committee to make the programs interesting, different, and spiritually uplifting. The sing- ing alone is an inspiration tothe listener. Talks on such themes as Great Christian Men, Missions, Hymn Interpretations, and Promises of God are given by faculty members and students alike. During Winter Bible School the committee brings, to the school, many out- side speakers from the Bible Schoo1,thereby acquainting the student body with men of the Mennonite Church at large. In summary I would say that this committee fulfills the most important work in the school. 20 Pt: K, J X - -It ,,...- X 1 jg' i, X X I 72211410 USIC commands outstanding enthusiasm at our school. Certainly life at I. M.S. would be drab without music. lt is said that music is the art of mak- ing harmonious combinations of sound, and that it certainly is at I. M. S. The heart-warming songs of our morning devotional periods have brought many comments from school visitors during the past, and the down to the people music programs rendered each year by the school music groups - mixed chorus, octet, and quartets - have brought banners from all sections o the Mennonite Church where they were given. We are glad that we can sing the good hymns of the Church hymnal and Life Songs along with Negro Spirituals and harder sheet music. Indeed, it would be hard to imagine a I. M. S. without music. f PEBLEU Q u RRTET U X ,ffl '. May 6, at 7:30 A.M., we started on our tour. Traveling was very hot and we stopped at two places, before reaching Souderton, to cool off and rest. Arriving at our destination at 5:00 P.M., we were ushered to the home of Russell Musselman for a delicious supper. Early Sunday morning we drove to Paoli for a forenoon program and dinner at Milton Brack- bi1l's. Sunday afternoon saw our school bus driving hard to reach Greenwood, Delaware. Here we received a cordial reception and an inviting supper. Before leaving next morning we sang at the Parochial school and the Greenwood public high school. A chance to wade in the Atlantic, a ferry boat ride, and a bountiful supper at Jonas Hege's were some of the highlights of the trip home. fkggough k t . very tired from the trip, we sang at Schellsburg Wednesday evening o wee To inspire the lives of fellow Christians and draw others to the fold was the aim of this tour. Mav this have been accomplished. 21 Quesvrsv X W S. A. It seems these are just as much a part of school life as studying history, English, and mathematics. Many of our great-grandparents would have dis- agreed with us on this, I believe, but nevertheless it is true. This is one way of learning to live together . E have had several good socials this year. On Friday afternoon of the first week of school,we had a hurried surprize social in the woods near the school. We played games, sang, and had a few refreshments. Another social took us to Sideling Hill on the back of Walter Alwine's truck, ending with a hike through the woods, lone group got lostll and supper by firelight. One cold night in December a large group of school students and alumni gathered in the hol- low for a sledding party! No one will forget the bobsled rides tif they weren't too timid to take onel. After everyone was well cooled off they went to the school for rolls and hot choco- late. Imagine how good things tasted after all appetites had been sharpened by the cold winds. Altogether, I believe our socials have been very enjoyable and long and fond will be the memories of them at our good old 1. M. S. Teacher: Miss Kaufman 3 cfj V W A A-2 J K if 2- .. -. TUDIES? Yes,there were plenty of them this year. We were exposed to the required amount of the r's . In addition. we studied the history of our country, industries of the world, the mechanics of our bodies and how to use the English language. Neither did we neglect the spiritual side of life. We learned about the beginning and progress of our Indian mission. A map of our Indian mission field and a panorama of an Indian Village were two of our projects. Another was the compiling of a scrapbook of our Mennonite foreign missions. Even so we had time for enjoying life. We read poems together for the enjoyment of them. We also enjoyed reading several books together. None of us will ever forget the adventures of Anne at Green Gables or Rebecca at the brick house in old Hungary with Cousin Kate from Bud- apest. All Work and no play is not recommended at I M. S.,so we took some time to play. During the first half of the year We had one period a week in which we played games. Second semester the literaries and clubs claimed our spare time. The highlights of the year were the three eve- ning socials. How we enjoyed the thrill of having the place to ourselves for the evening. A hay- ride on a frosty, autumn, moonlit night and playing Hide-and-seek in a partly darkened build- ing are some of the happy memories. Our springtime social was also one which was packed with unforgetable good times. As we look back we can say that this has been a most happy and profitable year. We will carry many happy memories of a pleasant year together. 1 - N , ' v XJ!! ! U A U, q 'I A gg .Q 5' .' A 30 ,El UR Bee Hivel' consists of 26 Workers with no drones and no dull moments. Our day begins with devotion and singing. Our noon meal is preceeded by singing a prayer song or by someone leading in giving thanks. At Christmas time we took part in the program the school gave at the First Mennonite Church in Johnstown. In Bible class we studied the plan of salvation, the Holy Spirit and the doctrines of our church. We have gained a greater appreciation for our church through this study. If the pupils seem a little far away at times it is possibly because in their Geography Class they are on an extensive tour of South America. During intermissions on cold winter days the boys set up a miniature Farm Show and also con- structed a wooden barn. The girls chief diversion is checkers. Our year was highlighted by such little affairs as a Halloween Party another on Valentine's Day and a taffy pull in the Spring. M. S. once more rings with the sounds of pupils ready for another year of hard work. The high school and seventh and eighth grades enjoyed a social this afternoon. Looks like the social committee really means business!! ALL ABOARD!! The high school pupils are off for Sidling Hill on a truck to spend the evening there. It was fun even though some of us did get lost!! What a relief for the boys and girls! The teachers have gone to Ohio for Teachers' Institute. A new teacher this morning. Mrs. Paul Wingard is teaching for Bro. Shetler while he is in Virginia. We welcome Bro. Shetler back this morning after his seemingly long absence. We pupils finally get a chance to catch our breath and enjoy a Thanks- giving vacation. Tonight the grades gave a short program and then the patrons had a business meeting. Clear the track!! The high school and seventh and eighth grade pupils had a sledding party on the Hollow road. Both teachers and pupils enjoy a vacation and come back still filled with the Christmas spirit. Most of the high school fellows went to the Farm Show today. What a sweet peace the girls enjoyed!! The high school pupils gave a program at the Stahl church. HORRORSII One year ago today we witnessed the burning of the school. Proposed chorus tour. More good times! Tonight is Class Night. Patrons' Day. At last!! Assurance of Salvation By Iohn R. Mumaw f ' There are two extreme positions which we must be taught to avoid. One is that which says that assurance is presumption -- that we cannot know that we , are saved until we have passed the judgment. Many of our elders, in a mis- fill' taken humility and diffidence, held this view, and approached death with fear and trembling. The older extreme has come into our way of thinking from 1' a system of theology which teaches eternal security through the choice and i order of a sovereign God. - Paul Erb, in the Preface 138 pagesg 31.75 Mcnnonlte Publishinq House fcoffalalol pdflhdx 'VII Nl!
