QQ Oh that men uoulcl prazsv mul or hzs uonrler ul uorlls to the rhzldren of men 1948 MEM O RE Johnstown Mennonite School I-lollsopple, Pennsylvania L Z- A h the Lord for his gooflnvss. f ' - f - - . ' ir Foreword The 1948 Mem-o-re Staff has tried to present to you in this annual the memories which have been dear to all of us. The theme of Nature and Music has been portrayed in this book because it is an expression of our love for the won- derful works of God. David, the sweet singer of Israel, gives his feelings of praise in numerous Psalms, excerpts of which have been used throughout this volume. The theme is appro- priately chosen for the fact that our school has given large place to nature study and music. I wish to thank the staff for their splendid co-operationg the adviser for her help and suggestionsg the faculty and stu- dent body for their contributions. All helped to make this year's Mem-0-re a success. -The Editor. School Board The School Board of Trustees is composed of nine memhers representing the participating congregations within the Iohnstown District, with not more than two elected from any one congregation. They are chosen annually at the regular meeting held during the last month of each term. The Board meets monthly, at which time a general oversight in the develop- ment, management, and conducting of the School is made. It is also the duty of the Board, in addition to their regular duties, to act in the capacity of a Reli- gious Welfare Committee, in conjunction with the Ministerial Body of the Iohns- town District Mennonite churches, to safeguard the spiritual interests of the School. At its regular meeting in the month of April, the Board elects the Principal of the School and the teachers for the ensuing term of school. During the last month of each term of school the Board has an annual meeting for the patrons and other interested persons, at which time reports are suhmitted and other necessary busi- ness transacted, endeavoring to maintain the co-operation of all persons concerned. for the general and spiritual welfare of the School. Un each desk vvas a little doily with a paper cup of candy. We learned many new hymns too. Mrs, Paul gave us a Childls Book of Hymns and we want to learn all of those. During part ol' our devotions we studied the Southwestern Pennsylvania Conference. YVe learned about the missions, ministers. congregations. and leaders of our conference. Life in our room is interesting. VVhy don't you come and visit and see for yourself? FIRST ROW lby walllz L. Stayrook, G. Lehman, M. Alwine, R. Shetler, M. Cable, D. Pebley, L. Spory, M. E. Hash, P. Shetler. Bro. Lehman gave us a series on 'KI-low to Get Along with People. One week we had Hymn Study given by different students. Dur- ing the week Mrs. Paul was here she conducted our devotions. We had visitors quite often during Bible school. Chapel O Lord. hott' grail nrt' fliy tuorksf and thy tlzoirglits uri' r't'ri' dwfi. Once a month we have chapel: this is the period before lunch on Friday. In this period we have a religious program concerning church activities. One pro- gram we had was on our Mennonite leaders in the past and present: this program was very interefting. Sometimes we had ministers come in and give us talks. Some ol' the men who were here were Ross Metzler. Paul Roth. and Harry Shetler, This program has been a help and inspiration to all of us this year. Religious Life Committee The Religious Life Committee consists of Iiva Milier, chairman, Herbert XVL-aver, assistant chairman: Mildred Harshherger, secretary, Paul Thomas, Iune Beisel, Iohn lidrei Lehman, with Brother Shetler as faculty adviser. The work of this committee is to prepare the programs for the morning devotions, chapel, and chorus trips. The committee meets once a week. In our morning devotional service of twenty minutes, teachers, as well as pupils, take part in singing, scripture reading, and prayer. Chapel services are held every four weeks, the third period on Friday, with such themes as The Fourfold Man, Answered Prayer, and Mennonite History. During Bible school we had various instructors and visiting ministers for our morning devotions and chapel programs, which we appreciated. Those who were here during the term were, Amos Miller, Merle Eshleman, Paul Roth, Elmer Moyer. Alfred Brenner, Marvin Landis, Claude Meyers, I. Paul Graybill, and Harry Shetler. Our aim is to present the spiritual side of life among secular subiects and to make programs that enrich character. Chorus Our school chorus consists of pupils from grades seven to twelve. ln the heginning of the year we had our voices tested and were placed in the parts we should sing. VVe have four-part singing. VVe not only sing religious songs hut also secular songs. The music includes the heavier type of music as well as the lighter type. Our chorus practice period is the last period on Friday. Our principal. Sanford G. Shetler, is the director. The l500lis we use include l.il'e Songs l and 2. Church Hymnal. Golden Anthems, and some sheet music. XVe have gixen a Iiew programs in the local community, as well as some on tour in the Southwestern Conference District. The chorus period starts with some confusion sometimes until all lind their places and exchange some conversation, hut finally the pitch pipe is hlown and we get in tune. Alter approximately an hour of singing, we are about ready to rest. We enioy this period very much and it is a nice way to end each week. VVe rind our appreciation for good music is increased. and our spiritual life is refreshed. FRONT ROW: R. Yoder, L. Shetler, L. Hostetler, B. Sheller, A. Lehman, B. Yoder, E. Alwine, R. Thomas, L. Other members are Stanwyn Shetler, Ruth Thomas, Ruth Beisel, and Esther Miller, with Bro. Lehman and Miss Eash as advisers. The first social was planned forthe seventh and eighth grades and high school on September 19 and was held in a near-by field. Refreshments were root heer, which the Social Committee made, and potatoes roasted in the red coals of the campfire. On October 244, the high school had a Halloween party. The students went for a surprise ride above the North Fork Dam while the social committee got the party in readiness. Then we came back to the school because the weather was not suitable to have it outside. A ghost was at the top of the stairs and splashed water on each one as he came up. It was decided to go caroling December 21, at the Old Folks' Home, Childrens Home, and the Somerset County Iail. One-half hour was spent at each place. The occupants seemed to enjoy the songs very much. The committee planned an informal sledding party in Ianuary. We all had a lot of fun with the exception of those who suffered a few wrecks. VVe had a surprise Leap Year Social on February 27, which was enjoyed by all. During the spring, socials were more frequent. FRONT ROW: E. Miller, R. Thomas, D. Shetler, L. We are trying to operate in the order of camp girls. While not much was done during the cold winter months, we engaged in various sports, such as volleyball, soccer, ping- pong, and hiking. This year we are buying a badminton set, an outdoor game similar to tennis. The club helps us to get out in the open and enjoy the wonderful things God has given us. Boys' Athletic Association During the winter months we lengthened and widened the ping-pong tables to regulation size, and painted them. Ping-pong, checkers, and Chinese checkers tournaments were the most prominent indoor games. As spring approached we bought baseball equipment. When the weather was nice we played baseball and other outdoor games. All of us were glad for this extra recreational period twice a month. -2g- Adviser: D. Pehley: I. Beisel: M. A visit to the club by the local game protector, and a day spent with him afield setting rabbit traps in closed hunting areas to secure rabbits for release, and placing corn for wild ducks was a high light of the year. The year's reward, however, was a trip to the lack Miner Bird Sanctuary, Kingsville, Ontario.
