Text from Pages 1 - 72 of the 1952 volume:

i LUZQYFEIE Oh, J.H.S., dear J.H.S., And when our high school days are o'er Our sons will ne'er forget And life's dark voyage begun, The golden haze of student days When waves of sorrow and distress Is round about us yetg Our weary souls o'er run, When days of yore will come no more How bright shall beam thy beacon light All through our many years, To guide us through the nightg The thoughts of you, so kind, so true, And so we catch its gleaming rays Will fill our eyes with tears. We'll know our path is right. When we have left these dear old halls And bid our friends adieug Another throng will sing our song, That rings through skies so blueg The memory of our high school life Shall dwell with us for aye, We'll all be true to Johnstown High And to the Red and Gray. 2. COMMENCEMENT Genesis 26:2b 'Fear not, for I am with th88.u We scatter all too soon our several ways, And thus our dear associations end-- Those who were near through years that sped along Will follow fanoy's whim, WHCTC sky- lines blend. The Shimmering shores of other lands will claim The dear companionship of some we knew while country lanes will lure the hearts of some, And city walls will hedge in some of you. It may be ships and tides will call to one Who, poring over books, must ever dream, And thus he satisfies his restless soul And finds his ships in clouds that whitely gleam. Our feet will walk the dusty ways, and smooth-- Our heads held high, nor will we pause to rest. We only ask that God may walk beside And help us choose the road that He thinks best. --Christel Hastings ACCALAUPEATE Sunday, HB7 25, 1952 8:15 P. M. WITNESSES: The Three Musketeers, CJohn, Tom, and Bob! Q'1as-5 Drophecg The date is May 9th, 1977 and gathering here on the picnic ground of the observation center on the planet, Earth, we have the 1952 grad- uating class of Johnstown-Monroe High School. They have returned for this reunion from every known or unknown planet in space. First we see NormanKPos-yrrlest, center and captain of the great- est pro-basketball team of the universe, the Space Pacers. And chat- ting with Norm is Mary Jo Middleton, renowned opera singer, who has just returned from a recital tour of Mercury, Venus, and Mars. Cwe understandvthat she cracked the glass dome of the Opera House on MarsJ Approaching us now is Harold Myers, president and owner of the M. M. M. KMad Money Maker! Co., Inc. With him is his private secretary, Joan Downing. This company operates solely for the purpose of making money for high school graduating classes. And there are Robert Cavendish, who now resides on the 3rd ring of Saturn, and Leland Hubbell, Nobel Prize Winner in the Field of Sci- ence. They seem to be talking over their latest inventions and dis- coveries. Bob has just discovered a nMiracle Capsuleu, which prevents middle-age spread. KFrom this angle it looks like Bob should try his own capsulel, and Leland recently invented an electro-magnet, which not only removes dandruff from bald-headed gents, but will also give an illustrous shine. Speaking of bald-headed ,gents, here comes Jack CDurocherJ Swick, famous manager of the Mercurian Comets, baseball champions of the universe. With Jack we see another outstanding spomm figure. Joe Hopkins, former boxing champion, is now promoting boxing in Sophonia Greely's Home for the Aged. Looking out into space we see the J. A. A. and M. Sky Rocket. As it lands June Forest, Ann Freeman, Anita Patton and Mary Dletzel, lst, 2nd, 3rd, and hth vice presidents of the nwhereditgon Finance Company, alite. This company makes loans to ex-husbands for alimony payments. Moving on we find two former classmates, who are discussing the present-day food situation. They are Dorothy Neibarger, a noted di- etician, whose slogan is uThe way to a man's heart is by dietingu, and Mary Alice Locker, a well-known Home Economics instructor, who is now teaching her students how to keep the holes in donuts from looking so empty. From across the grounds we hear the season's latest hit nWhen the Sun Shines, There's NotFog In My Eyes, But Youn, written by that un- canny composer, Eddie O'Bryan, from Tin Pan Alley. And there is Eddie himself conversing with two of the foremost authors of the present day--Carolyn Weeks, whose latest publication is HA Friend of the Familyu, highly recommended as advice to the lovelorn, and Mary Jo Orndorff, who has written the most recent best seller, nHow to Chew More And Bigger Wads of Gumu. This book is a scientific treatise which required four years in the writing. Cruising in now, we spy the special, elite, deluxe, air cruiser, designed, patented, and piloted by Lee Ashbrook. Its owner is none other than Madam Mary Elizabeth Dietrich, foremest designer of dogs' clothing. She announces that she will enter the field of designing for men's and women's clothing at the next sun-length and predists dmt her styles will set the pace for all. And over ln the corner all by himself is Robert xl am and forever shall be a bachelorJPitt. He is living in his dark and dismal mansion on the most distant satalite of Pluto. And coming over to try to make conversation with Bob is Beverly Bauchert. Bev, as you recall, has that ngift of gabn and has become known to us as the second Luella Parsons. Still on the subject of gabby people, this group here looks like-- why, yes, it is nThe Windy Liars Club.n And it sounds like they're in session right now. There's the President,Dav1d Skeens talking to Miss Mary Lou McCullough, last year's prize winner for telling the biggest whopper. With them is John Elbon, past president of the club and pre- sent interplanet president of the club. This club, as we understand it, has the largest membership of al existing clubs in the interplanet scope. And there is Doyle Melick. He now lives in a trailer on the new planet, Ausphelia, which he recently discovered. His new trailer home is robot controlled and he travels from one planet to another by push- ing a button. Doyle is talking with Dorothy Hopkins and her brother, Howard Hopkins. Dorothy is a talented designer, who is best-known for her 'Swoop-the-Droopnnecklines, and uswitch-the-Hitchn skirts. Howard ls the president of the Interplanatary HI Get My Crops In Firstn Society. OUCHI What hit me? Oh, now I know. Tom L. Johnson on the loose again and at his age, playing with spit-ball guns. And right there with him is Harold Romine, the inventor of the spit-ball gun and also the burp gun. Incidentally, Tom is a noted surgeon at the Radie Bom Sanitarium on duck Creek at Sunny Slope. Over here on the left is Monroe Wright, owner of the Speedway Run and talking to him is Eddie Dietrich, who just yesterday set the new record for an auto speed, when he went down the Run at 1200 miles an hour. You know how Eddie used to make everyone eat his dust back there in his high school days. Well, it seems like he's still doing it. Buzzing in now we see Dale Ashbrook in his supersonic racer....He is returning from taking Harry KEinsteinJ Kincaid on a scientific ex- pedition into outer space, I7 Coming across the grounds now we see Albert Grove and Lester Hulse. Lester is explaining how his new device for making Dairy Qua n operates, and Albert, being a mechanic and not much interested in Dairy Queens, is trying to switch the subject to his newly acquired chain of garages. The last little group that we see is three charming ladies of the '52 graduating class--Pat Adams, who is now a millionaire's wife, and among her menagerie she has everything from Mexican Chihuahuas t0 Pink elephants--Shirley Smith, who runs Miss Elvira Smigley's Ole' Maids Rest Haven and Marianne Kasson, who writes nNews as I Heard It for the Gabby Gossip Gazette. 1 en o ed a lovely afternoon we leave the grounds looking for- sgrdngo tgeynext reunion of the Class of 1952. Signed, Heckle, Jeckle, d an Speckle. Qflass lliisinrg As we approach the end of our high school life we cast a glance back into our past twelve years. In our class of thirtyieight graduates, nine members have attended Johnstown-Monroe High School for the entire twelve years They are: Patricia Adams, Lee Ashbrook, Robert Cavendish, Joan Downing, John Elbon, Tom L. Johnson, Doyle Melick, Albert Grove, and Shirley Smith. Four students, Mary Jo Orndorff, Tom L. Johnson, John Elbon, and Harry Kincaid, received election into the Licking County Honor Society and the National Honor Society. Patricia Adams, Joan Downing, Robert Cavendish, and Marianne Kasson joined this group in our final year. As Juniors we were hosts to the Seniors at our Junior and Senior Banquet, held at the Seneca Hotel. The affair was a great success. The compliment was returned by the present Junior class this year. This year our basketball and football teams were very lucky. In football we tied with Hebron and Su mit Station for the County Championship. In basketball we were also County Champs. This year under the guidance of Pres. Harry Kincaid,V. Pres. Robert Cavend1sh,Sec. Marianne Kasson and Treas.Mary Jo Orndorff, we started out to earn money for a Senior trip to Washington,D.C. and New York City. Sunday evening, May 25, we filed down the aisle Of the Johnstown High School Auditoriu to attend our Baccalaureate Service with Reverend Walter H. Reitz as speaker of the evening. Dr. Walton E. Bliss, Executive Head of the Ohio Education Association spoke to J-eight green and white-gowned students at the graduation S8PV1b1d on May 26. May we extend our heartiest thanks to the faculty who have striven to advise and intrust us so that in years to come we shall look back with ronu memories to tnosa vears which soD0- tently influenced our lives. The band had forty-one members and its activities this year began with its attendance at the Hartford and Ohio State Fairs. It entered a contest at Buckeye Lake this Fall and won second prize. During the football season, the band marched at games away and at home. Its attendance at basketball games during the season and at the tournament games gave the players plenty of support. For the dedication of the new school building in December, the boys' and rirls' glee club sang an arrangement O1 HYou'1l Never Walk Aloneu and the band played selections from Strauss. Johnstown was represented in the All County Music Festival with thirty three members from both organizations. For the first time several members from the music orvanizations of Johnstown were chosen to participate in the Ohio Wesleyan Music Festival. For the closing-of their activities, the glee club presented a vocal mumber for the Baccalaureate Service. The music organizations express their appreciation to our musical dir- ectors, Lawrence Gillum, Mrs. Muriel knstaett, Mrs. Josephine Perkins, and Harry Bland. 47 - O aff.
