This is the city, the city of Johnstown. Among the thousands who live here are the hundreds who hang out at The School. This book is their story. It is a real life account of the lives of the people of J.H.S. at work and at play, in gangs and on teams. It pictures the leaders and the followers, the famous and the infa- mous. It reveals the struggles of the average citizens' daily existence - from fighting the noise and confusion of traffic jams and long lines to enjoying the pleasure and excitement of a night at the theatre or stadium. It covers the bright lights of center stage and the dark recesses of the back alleyways. This is a portrait of “Life in the Citv. I s 7 9 12 Ctx 'DST '?estr7ZT Some people are fans of some sports. Some people attend some activities. Some people work for some students. But not Paul Valachovic. He is for every- one. He can be found at virtually every Johnstown High School activity, contest, and event. Despite having been over-looked by the football team dur- ing his own high school years, Mr. Valachovic, Class of’39, has missed only one Johnstown-Glov- ersville game in the last 50 years, not surprising for a man whose enthusiasm for Johnstown has only grown over the years, grown to such an extent that some claim he now even bleeds purple and gold. A member of the Board of Education since 1982, Mr. Valachovic puts his heart, his time, and his effort into both the present and the future of Johnstown’s students. It is because we know that he has been, is, and always will be there for the kids of Johnstown that we dedicate this yearbook to Mr. V, Johnstown’s Greatest Fan. 17 CLASS U Cm ti fw o -9ges. . Places To Go And People To Meet The International Club, open to all students, features activities which bring Johnstown stu- dents together with other Johnstown students, as during the winter camping trip, with for- eign students, as during the AFS weekend, and with students of New York and other states, as during the short-term exchanges. The club sponsors several in-school fund rais- ers and foreign exchanges for students who wish to spend the summer or year abroad. This year's exchange student, Yukiko Ko- bayashi. from Higashimatsuyama, Japan, stayed with the Chadwick family. After her year in Johnstown, she intends to attend a university in Japan and hopefully some day to visit England. INTERNATIONAL CLUB: (First Row) D. Smith, S. Corbett, K. Schultz, D. Popp. D. All stories are written by the students who also provide all photo- graphs and art work used in the newspaper. Under the direction of advisors Mr. Marciniec and Mr. Rhodes, the stories are proofread, typed, and layed out to be printed. The issues are distributed free. The operating budget for the Bugle is de- termined by the sale of ads which appear in the paper and in the foot- ball program. 123 Once again, Student Council hosts Battle of the classes The Class of '88 scored a win against the Class of '89 in the annual game of mule hoop. The winning bucket was scored by Carolyn Schreivogl to give the seniors a 40 - 38 victory. At the end of the first quarter, the junior boys were leading 12 - 10, but the senior girls turned the score to 18 - 16 at the half. The junior boys rallied in the third quarter. The fourth quarter effort by the senior girls, however, proved to be the winning edge. 125 Parades, performances, concerts, competitions Making Beautiful Music Band The band had a very busy year under the direction of Mr. Vin- cent J. Gaeta. The Marching Band performed at the home football games as well as the local parades and competed in the Columbus Day Tourna- ment of Bands in Binghamton, where they took second place. In December, the band per- formed in the Christmas Con- cert and completed the citrus fruit sale to raise money for a spring trip. In February, select- ed members of the band partic- ipated in the Fulton County Music Festival. Springtime brought performances at the Mohawk Band Pageant, an overnight trip to Hersey Park, PA where they competed in Concert Band and Marching Band events and the Spring Concert. The Boys’ Swim Team faced tough competition, often swimming against Class A schools, but they have improved every year. Next year should show even more improvement with sever- al strong sophomores return- ing, although the team will suf- fer the loss of senior Bill Wager who swam four years on varsity and served this year as captain. 17« High scores and consistency lead keglers to Foothills Council Title We Are The Champions Bowling Stats The JHS Bowling Team won the Foothills Council League this year, wrapping the season win up in the very last match. Determination and skill were the keys to their 43-13 game record and their 13-2-4 match record. Paul Klempa led the Foothills League with a 211.6 average. Team- mates Greg Dodson was second with 193.6, Jon Ackerknecht was seventh with 186.8, and Brian Stoutncr was eighth with 181.9. Outstanding scores were turned in by Paul Klempa, with a high single of 279 two 700+ and twelve 600+ series. Greg Dodson had the League's high scries of 752. Dodson, Klempa, and Trajlinek were chosen for the first team All Stars and Ackerknecht was voted to second team All Stars. BOWLING: (First Row) C. Ruggcri, D. Billa, T. Rccd. J. Slovick, P. Klempa. Charles, Coach Lavignc Newnham shines as Sectional Champ while many teammates also share in success All The Right Moves This year’s Varsity Wrestlers' 2-10 record earned them a fourth place in the Foothills League tying with Glens Falls and Hudson Falls. Coach M. Beatty felt that the team’s strength was in its seniors Glen Saltsman, Keith Smith. Mike VanValkenburgh, Scott Lewis, George Newnham, and Tony Neri. The team’s weakness was in its lack of wrestlers to fill all the weight classes, particularly the lower weights. As a consequence, the team had to for- feit three to four weight classes per match. Four of their wins were against Ball- ston Spa, Queensbury, Hud- son Falls, and crosstown ri- val, Gloversville, and one was a non-league win against Mayfield. I GOT angry. It was such a trashy thing to say. Like I was so desperate lor him I'd jump off a cliff'or something. We didn't have anv birth control. I started out saying it was just the wrong time. Then I started thinking it was the wrong guy Alter he said that, he put on this big act about it. II he really cared, he'd have let it drop. He'd have given me time. I mean, you don't have to be the brain of the world to know von don’t have sex without protection. And you sure don't make a baby with a guy who thinks he can threaten you. Nobody should pressure anybody to have sex. Especially if you feel you’re not ready. Or prepared. It’s a fact of life that if you have sex without safe, effective birth control, you’re going to get pregnant. Who should be responsible for birth control? The Organization began the production by selling the ads and subscriptions, identifying pictures, and finishing layouts. The Nightcrew took over where the Organization left off, doing all the odd jobs, the typing, the filing, the running after missing information, and the late night cleaning up on Wednesdays. The Notorious, Editor-in-Chief David D'A- more. Managing Editor Cindy Vacek, and Busi- ness Editor Cheryl Hill, were responsible for the creativity, the production, and the bookkeeping.
